It's essentially a film about people, some of whom are completely hatstand about vintage arcade games (Donkey Kong) in particular, and being the "best" in the world at said games (game). It actually includes "You're The Best(Around)" last heard in any film from the 80s with a montage and "Eye of the Tiger" (ditto) as they prepare for the mental, physical and familial demands of standing in front of Donkey Kong machine for hours on end preparing for the mother of all Donkey Kong showdowns.

If you are in to the subject matter, as I am, it might be easy to see it as some kind of Spinal Tap for twilight dwelling arcade trolls, but it isn't. It's a cracking film and it is real. The people and the places all exist, and it is wonderful.

I'd wholeheartedly second this recommendation. It's one of the most memorable documentary's I've ever seen. It's got all of the strong characters, plots, twists and turns of a scripted political drama but it's about grown men in arcades. Really lovely stuff.

I would recommend a film called Skeletons - it is sort of a British version of a Charlie Kaufman film (e.g. Beautiful Sunshine of a Spotless Mind), with a touch of Withnail and I.

It was quite a gentle, quirky, eccentric film, and quite typically British.

Excellent performances from the likes of Jason Issacs as 'The Colonal' and Dogme actress Paprika Steen as Jane.

Nice setting too - in English countryside - and also could have been set at any time in last 30-40 years. No mobile phones, computers, or such like.

It won the Michael Powell award at EIFF. A nice little independent film, well worth checking out if you like your film to be a little bit off-kilter.

I went to the Odeon in Sheffield last night to see Inception. The film's really good but was spoilt a little by the colour flickering about 2 hours in.

I went and complained and got us all free tickets to a film of our choice - including 3D or even the Odeon in that London's West End. Score!

(My mum'd be so proud - that's the kind of thing she does...)

I love this movie. I love how devious Billy Mitchell is and how they try to portray him as the pantomine villain and make out that he isn't good enough to play Steve Weibe, but then you have to remember that he's played through Pac Man to the Kill screen eating EVERY dot and EVERY ghost and EVERY piece of fruit and you realise that, yeah, maybe he is good enough. The thing with the video record is still pretty dubious though.

Also, this movie is wholly responsible for me sitting in front of my laptop one evening watching a live feed of Steve Weibe going for the record again. Watching someone play Donkey Kong is really tedious, dont do it kids.

Great film though, can't recommend it enough

Yeah I'm looking forward to it as well. Yer man sure looks a lot like him.

Was only just reading about the English girl who plays Jane Birkin. Sad story.

I'm probably too late here, but I thought An Education was really good. Haven't seen the other one, though.

I'm off to see Inception tonight. In the mood for something short, light and forgettable - hope it fits the bill!

(wink)

i can confirm this was definitely NOT shit. it was very good. i really enjoyed it. and now i really want to read the graphic novel that the director did that he based the film on. amazon seems to have one quiet expensive copy, but im going to investigate further. hmm. anyway, the film was really beautiful and surreal, i loved the inner monologue/alter ego of serge that followed him around, i loved it when they both flew out of the window, and the women in it were all of course stunningly beautiful. i cant quite imagine what it would have been like had charlotte taken the lead role as apparently initially intended, but im so glad this film got made in the end.

i decided on An Education. We're showing it tomorrow. Everyone I know who has seen it thought it was great, so hopefully everyone will like it tomorrow.

I did however manage to see the Serge Gainsbourg film the other day. It looks great and is very inventive, but I feel that ultimately it is not a great film. Its big problem for me was that it assumed too much knowledge about the subject - fine for a French audience, not so great in Anglophonia.

I really, really liked Gainsbourg. I thought it would be quite a serious biopic so all the fantastical stuff about his "mug" was a big surprise, and I loved it! It wasn't particularly cohesive, seemed more like a collection of sketches from his life rather than a full story, but I thought the style was brilliant and it made me laugh and grin a lot. There were a few references I didn't get due to lack of prior knowledge, but nothing that spoiled the enjoyment. Plus I read all about his life when I got home which was interesting too!

Also recently I've been to see Seperado!, which is basically a South American tour diary by Gruff Rhys from the Super Furries, combined with investigations into the Welsh settlers who moved to Brazil and Argentina in the 19th Century. It was really interesting, I didn't know they had penguins in Argentina! And Gruff's laid-back welsh style was amusing.

And last night I went to see Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky, which was interesting but felt a bit overlong and didn't have as strong a narrative as the previous Coco Chanel film (which I went along to somewhat reluctantly and found to be a very pleasant surprise).

That sounds brilliant actually.

Welsh Patagonia is a bit mad isn't it? It's a funny little colonial anomaly.
