That is, even by his high standards, goddamned incredible. Thanks for mentioning it; I'd not heard it before.

Also, any suggestions on Lou Reed or John Cale solo albums? Lou Reed's New York is one of my favourite ever records; some of his best writing, I'd say.* I'm very fond of the one Reed & Cale did together, too, Songs for Drella . *Also, it gives me an excuse to link to this: http://www.youtube.com/wa...

I've been listening to this song a lot recently. This is a pretty fantastic live arrangement of it.

Re: shit that totally makes you shiver
At that bit near the end of Magnolia Electric Co's Farewell Transmission when he keeps shouting "this is a farewell transmission... listen! " I get that brilliant terrifying feeling of hairs standing on end and like a rush of cold. It's sort of great when you feel like that, isn't it. I think somet...

People who put on shows: I saw this band in Dublin this summer, and they're one of the most fun and awesome bands I've seen in a while! 'New Situation' on that EP might go some way towards convincing you.
We've an EP out: http://skelocrats.bandcamp.com/

The new compilation is fantastic too. The Squarehead song on it is one of nicest bits of chorus-writing I've heard in quite a while. (It also has the merit that its first two distorted notes remind me of the start of dEUS' 'Put the freaks up front'.)

Re: gender equality and indiepop
It's not that I doubt its usefulness as such, more that I think certain strands of feminism pose women's oppression as a matter for women alone and a question which can only be solved through "rules and regulations, quotas and tokenism". I'd much prefer the feminism of figures such as Zetkin and Lu...

Re: gender equality and indiepop
What I find slightly odd about the blog piece is that it implies that by simply having a nice, neat 50/50 split then things will be fine. I think it's a bit more complicated than simply totting a few numbers up. I couldn't care less whether it's a man or a woman or a transgender person trying to po...

oh, everard, tish and fipsy! I love the name because it's a bit insolent, throwaway, cocks a snook and isn't one of them pedestrian 'the' band names I don't think v'kids even have to know who joanna newsome is, it's just a sassy name for a band but with an added piquant layer of delight if you do k...

Re: New musical discoveries
Has anyone listened to that stream of the Waterboys' new album on the Guardian's website? Some of it sounds fantastic to me. If the idea of Mike Scott singing Yeats (or Mike Scott singing) doesn't put you off, Mad as the Mists and Snow is worth a listen. The woman who does some singing on the record...

This is a lovely arrangement of Waxwing:
I don't think I've heard this Olivia Chaney before. Is she a well known type
person? Her voice somehow suits that song very well, at any rate.

"When the daily parade of the troubles you made gets you down, just consider the fate of the wide open space from town to town" is a nice bit of writing.

Only now have I realised that the reason the image sounds coherent is that the song's about a real person.gloom button wrote:Even just the central image in that song being so ... coherentbartblueboy wrote: "the architect" ... a real shame !
