Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

As a sidenote, because we're mentioning Sarah Records and racism both here, and in my mind some things connected and I had to think of this album: http://cdn.discogs.com/5fpNgSg9gheTv7f4mnDcSiK6iTY=/fit-in/350x350/filters:strip_icc():format(jpeg):mode_rgb():quality(96)/discogs-images/R-1898821-13158...

Re: Is indiepop racist?

MaxS, even though I can follow your line of reasoning your above post feels like a true minefield of assumptions, generalisations and too quickly drawn conclusions to me. No offense intended, and thank you for sharing your opinion, of course. But instead of trying to defuse the bombs in that minefie...

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

Yeah tonieee, I have some concerns about 1. as well. Not so much because I think it would be patronising, but more because of the delicate issue of identifying the people who this would apply to. My main thought was it could be good if minorities could be motivated to bring along friends from the sa...

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

I've started something about this on Facebook as well. These are the ideas I've posted so far (partially inspired by posts here): 1. Shows and festivals: people who identify as a minorities get in for free or cheaper. Make sure that you tell attendees in advance that the goal of this is to encourage...

Yes, good point. I thought it was possibly included in cultural background, but it's not really.

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

I came accross this from Advocates for Youth, defining a safe place: A place where anyone can relax and be fully self-expressed, without fear of being made to feel uncomfortable, unwelcome, or unsafe on account of biological sex, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, cul...

Songs that could actually be good

I often hear a song that has a lot of potention in my ears, but there are some things about it that I don't love that dominate. Like just now, I was listening to 'Good as gold (Stupid as mud)' by The Beautiful South. It's got the melody, it's got the lyrics. But I imagine this song would be a lot mo...

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

If there were to be a change to the forum rules maybe it should be along the lines of "people from privileged/majority groups should listen to and stand up for people of minority/disadvantaged/oppressed groups" (there's probably a better way of putting that). I like that. The suggestion to add some...

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

Have there been any racist issues on this forum that haven't been properly dealt with? Have there been any issues that could have been avoided if the rules to this forum were spelled out differently? I'm not trying to be a dick myself, but if this forum actually has any barriers set up that discour...

Re: Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

I had a look at our forum rules: usual forum rules apply, basically don't be a prick and try not to be tedious. Avatars are limited to 100x100 pixels to keep the forum tidy. I'm just brainstorming here, but for just a start would it be an idea to at least include some lines in there that explicitely...

Indiepop: a celebration of diversity

In another thread I wrote this: Instead of trying to define racism or asking if we are racist or not I think we should put the effort in making it explicitly clear that everyone is welcome and that nonwhite people will not just be tolerated as long as they stay quiet, but will be actively and explic...

Re: Is indiepop racist?

if indiepop or any other scene are experienced as exclusionary, as I've already said we should do whatever we can about that, which is obviously more important than semantics. Agreed. Instead of trying to define racism or asking if we are racist or not I think we should put the effort in making it ...

Re: Is indiepop racist?

I don't want to (or have the knowledge to) get too academic about how to define racists, but in my mind it looks something like this: 1st category: openly racist people who actively act and speak in a deliberatley racist manner and believe their race is superior to other races 2nd category: casually...

Re: Is indiepop racist?

White people's sensibilities are usually very fragile when it comes to race. I feel that this is due to the two-sided belief that a racist is a bad person and a good person is not racist. This line of thinking causes that when a poc communicates to us that something that was said or done was experie...
