I'm in Oldham. Which isn't that far away.

We're going on a Christmas do in Halifax this year. You're going to tell me there's an amazing indipop disco club which I can drag all my bemused work colleagues along to, aren't you?
Fuck your tea room.

Oh no I'm a terrible person who forgot to look about writing a whole message!

I'm sorry that it's 10(?) months late! If you didn't manage to scare your work colleagues off by taking them to Halifax, you could bring them to check out Doghouse at Arden Road Social Club this year (shameless self-promotion). We get some decent bands that are passing through from Manchester to Leeds - The Lovely Eggs & The Wave Pictures are a couple that are coming up soon. Plus it's a social club so the beers cheap and there are sandwiches behind the bar ;) http://www.doghouseuk.com/

Does any Indiepop happen over Oldham way?

I put an indiepop disco on in Oldham once in 1999. The only venue that would even entertain it was a gay club and it had to be on a Thursday night. I was keen to play vinyl but they only had CD decks so I hired some Cold War-era duo-turntables-in-a-flight-case thing that weighed a ton and needed coins on the tonearms to weigh them down. In the end I was just very glad I had Soft Cell, Blondie and Pet Shop Boys in my record box and the only vaguely indiepop people were this cute couple who came from the local college. So, two indiepoppers and a handful of 50-odd year old gay blokes were my captive audience.

In short, no, not really. Manchester, innit! ;-)

PS: Yeah the Halifax work day out was a bit of a disaster. I got off at the wrong stop (Sowerby Bridge) in torrential rain. I got drenched by a lorry driving through a kerbside lake. I got horribly drunk. The torrential rain caused mudslides which halted trains at Hebden Bridge and it took me EIGHT hours to get home via Blackburn and a trio of rail replacement buses. I might use the complimentary free ticket First Rail gave me as way of apology to come to Halifax again for that Doghouse thing. Fancy the Wave Pictures one.

Haha! That sounds brilliant. I wonder if you'd get a more receptive crowd in Oldham in 2016?!

Oh no, that night does sound like a disaster! Buuuuut... Sowerby Bridge is a better night out than Halifax ;) If you do come to Doghouse make sure you check the trains first! There were definitely some diversions last time I looked. I'd feel really guilty if you had to go via Nottingham or something ridiculous like that. Make sure you come and say hello too :)

I never saw the original post last year, but I'm in Huddersfield so not far from Halifax. Didn't know there was any indiepop in West Yorkshire at all apart from the odd thing in Leeds or Wakey. I'm from Bradford and used to feel I was the only Indiepop person there. I'll have to pop down to the Doghouse some time.

Ah Huddersfield is terrible for indiepop! I used to live there so I can slag it off ;) I'll try and update this thread with doghouse gigs.

Long Division festival in wakey is the best I've found for indiepop so far :)

I'm living a bit near Halifax! Just a few stops down the line towards Lancashire, just past Hebden Bridge. I used to like a record shop in Halifax (in the Peace Hall or something) but last time I visited the place, there wasn't really anything decent. Not like the Todmorden Toy Museum anyway.

No, but I think The League of Gentlemen may have got a little inspiration from there whilst scouting Todmorden as a possible location for the TV series...
