Using Bandcamp

Post by humblebee » Wed Jun 19, 2013 8:44 pm

It's alright actually, isn't it.

Would anyone happen to know if you can manage more than one artist from just the one account? Like on last.fm?

I do on the odd box one. It's a bit of a fudge but it's ok.

Ah, but is that only because you're a label?

I've got four accounts. As such, this information intrigues me deeply.

Cheers Trev. I can't find anything to add another artist to my account, so.

You don't - you upload and change artist name on the release.

Bandcamp vs Soundcloud - any thoughts, musicianists?

I really love Bandcamp now, as both an artist and a fan. But it's very structured around particular releases, isn't it - I mean everything has to be part of an album, type thing. I sort of wonder if Soundcloud is better for single tracks and demos and whatnot. Also I'm planning to put some field recordings online as a sort of appendix to my new album and I'm thinking Soundcloud might be better for that.

For me (as a consumer, I've never put my own music on there before) bandcamp. I've never really got on with soundcloud, maybe because it's more focused on streaming which I find inconvenient. Also the fact that with bandcamp you can get a choice of formats is something that to me is quite essential (though I'm probably a bit unusual in that).

I mostly use bandcamp, but if there's an individual song that I want to upload, and I don't want it to clutter up my bandcamp, I'll post it on soundcloud. I often do this if I'm releasing a single song from an upcoming album to a smaller audience (e.g. anorak forum).

Yeah, I would probably say to use Bandcamp when you have an album or an EP ready but soundcloud if you just want to get a song out into the world quickly.

Ah, OK, yeah - that's kind of what I was thinking there. Cheers.

A thing I noticed on Bandcamp recently is that you can out a video up on the page with your song, which is good. It strikes me that you can use Bandcamp to make your single track look like an actual single, with it's own page and artwork and video and different formats, without actually pressing up any records or having anything physical to sell or, y'know, actually making any real effort whatsoever. Whereas Soundcloud is probably good for just throwing things on to the internet, but seems to be more an addendum to other things, in the same way that Youtube is. So I'd do a Bandcamp page if I were you.

I really like Bandcamp - it seems to do everything perfectly, and I can see how a field recordings appendix could look really good on there as a separate release. It's a lot more user friendly and easier to navigate. Unless you're on the paid account, Soundcloud seems to restrict how people set up their pages, and Soundcloud artists pages can look messy as a result. Of course, you could upload it on both, and then direct people to whichever looks best!

I didn't realise you could now add videos on Bandcamp - thanks andyi!

Yeah, I think it's quite a new thing. Wiaiwya use it a lot, there's quite a few on this (very good) album:

I like the way the video emerges from the top of the screen, it feels like the future. You can theoretically embed the videos from bandcamp as well, but it doesn't work on here.

Anyone know how to set up a bundle thing so you can offer two albums together at a discounted price? I can't seem to find this option.

Create a 'merch item' that includes all of the things you want.

Ah, so you can't do it by adding an option to an existing merch item? OK. Thanks.

When it asks you what kind of merch item it is, you have to say 'other', right?

yep, or do a lead item and then add the rest as extras, if that makes sense.
