Mobile phones and phone companies and deals and that

Post by humblebee » Tue Mar 27, 2012 9:00 pm

Hello Anorak. I am shortly to switch to a new mobile phone company. Are they all pretty much the same, apart from one being a bit more of a massive tax-dodging bastard than the others?

For tax-dodging, avoid Vodaphone, but, by the nature of your question, I guess you probably knew that already.

As far as service goes, avoid T-Mobile. Shit coverage, and you get cut off if you're on incoming calls only for more than about 5 seconds...

If you join Orange I'll be able to use my as yet unused Magic Number and ring you up for free. I don't know if they're better or worse than anyone else though as I've never been with anyone else. I've not had any complaints so far. But I am quite easy to please.

You can download the full guide for £3, but a quick squint at the link below seems to suggest that of the 'big ones' O2 might be the most ethical.

I may have come to this thread too late, but everyone I know who uses Giffgaff waxes lyrical about it and it does seem to be extraordinarily cheap.

I wouldn't touch 3 with a bargepole. I'm currently on 3 and can't get signal in parts of central London.

I wouldn't either. I don't think 3 is for me. It's for the young people.

But bloody hell, you're right, those Giffgaff deals look amazing. Thanks! Hmmmm...

I was gonna switch to Giffgaff but some bastard nicked the SIM in the post. And I;m too lazy to order another one just yet. Yes, THAT lazy.
I am struck speechless by the nape of your neck.

I think ultimately 3 is for people who want an iPhone but don't want to pay more than thirty quid for it. The payoff is shit network, shit customer service, and shit two-year contracts. Never again. Probably.

Giffgaff is also meant to be the most eco-friendly network by quite some way if that's a thing that's important to you. I know this because everyone I know who is on Giffgaff guilt-trips me about not being on Giffgaff.

Lost my shitting phone last night. Just ordered a GiffGaff SIM. Which will be useless when it shows up, but it means I'm part way there...

Oh hello. I was going to post here to ask whether anyone knew anything about Giffgaff but everyone's been talking about it all along!

My contract's running out in a month or so. Has anyone here tried Giffgaff yet? Would you recommend it?

i do believe it's cheap, but i was informed via twitter that at one stage that their network went off because their basement flooded. bless, that just makes me want to give them a hug.

A mate of mine at work swears by Giffgaff. And, y'know, ten quid a month for 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited data isn't too shabby. So I am intending to move over as soon as I get my shit together to do all the admin. I've already got the sim card. Unless mrs humblebee has thrown it away. But then I could always get another one.

Yes.

I've been on Giff Gaff for a few months now. Can't say I've had any problems and I do that tenner a month jobbie and you really can't go wrong with unlimited data. I mean, they're still a phone company so they must be evil somewhere along the line, they've just managed to convince me that maybe they might be a bit less evil than all the others. or maybe just cheaper.

My Nexus 4 finally arrived today. How the bloody hell do I get 13 year's worth of contact info from my old 'regular' SIM on to the new Micro SIM?

Schnickenrickenfracken etc.

Ha ha - same problem here. One way apparently is to cut the old sim card to the new size. Hmmm I think not! It's transferring contacts from the sim to google contacts manually for me carrying out a cull at the same time...............

EDIT - or use this stapler!

Tom, try this...

On your old phone you need to import the contacts from your sim first. Detailed step by step lifted from another site and reproduced below;

First backup your sim contacts
* select people app on phone
* menu , import/export , export to SD card , select SIM
* Note file name displayed and OK on confirmation
* If required repeat for contacts stored on phone , but select PHONE

Now to move from sim to Google
* Select people app on phone
* Click menu and select import/export
* select import from SIM card
* When prompted create the contact under account 'Google'
* If required repeat for contacts stored on phone 'Import from phone'

Now all contacts on sim will now also be on your Google account (see addresses in people - there will be two for each one imported).

Has anyone else had this ridiculous Content Lock thing?

I've just switched network provider and apparently I'm not allowed to use Untappd until I prove I'm 18 or over so they can remove Content Lock.

Untappd is a social app about pubs and beer.

So I can take my four-year-old son into a pub and he can sit and watch me drink beer. But his 40-year-old dad isn't allowed to use his new phone to read about or mention beer.

What, and indeed, the fuck.

Sometimes my phone tells me it can't tell how old I am and doesn't let me on Anorak in case I'm under 18. I'm not sure how it can tell how old I am at other times but it's almost flattering like being asked for id in a pub (not that that happens to me anymore - in fact the other week a young woman gave up her seat for me on the bus - it made me so depressed!). I don't know why Orange think Anorak has an over 18s policy - it has never stopped me doing anything else on the internet.
