When did you first get on the internet?

Post by humblebee » Thu Dec 20, 2012 9:18 pm

Email and web. When did you first get on it? When did people who work in ordinary office jobs typically first get it?

At home - I got my first Internet connection in 1995. I paid £200 for 28K modem.

In work it was 1998. I think.

I really can't put a specific date on it (even vaguely by year)... the internet seemed like a novelty mid-late nineties (for me) and then- boom!- the 21st century came and suddenly it was at home and at work and seemed like it had always been there...

I got on the internet in 1996 at home.

The school I was at had two PCs with the internet on in 1995, I only got to try it once though. It was like magic, very slow magic.

I did get a bit confused that you did single rather than double clicks online

Was 1998 for me. Dad had a massive shock with a bill for about £370 the first time. Those were expensive sessions on NME chat.

The Internet was a mindblower when I first used it. Then I quickly got impatient because it was slow as fuck. Then I remember being completely gobsmacked at being able to download an MP3, albeit it taking about 2 hours to download. THEN, broadband! Fucking hell that changed the game big time.

I remember watching Neighbours sometime about 1991 and Todd chatting to someone online on his green almost dot-matrix monitor. That were mental.

The first place I lived which had internet was moved into in 2000 I think. Work went Windows and internet in 2001 maybe.

Only now am I returning to pre-2001 workrate.

1996. I did a week's work experience in my mum's office, she worked for a massive software company and they'd had the internet for ages. I spent a week browsing Manic Street Preachers and fansites and wrote something in someone's guestbook - you had to put an email address in to post, so I used my mum's, two weeks later she came home furious because she'd had loads of emails from the guestbook owner thanking me for visiting her site and proclaiming that "the Manics are FUCKING AWESOME!" Surprisingly, this incident didn't stop her from getting the internet at home a year later, and I ran up a massive phone bill from downloading free mp3s from the Kill Rock Stars website and pissing about for hours and hours on a Hole messageboard. MEMORIES.

Remember getting email at work in 1993.

Then finally getting a PC with email and internet access at home about a year later.

i think it was 1996 (or whatever my first year at uni was, which i'm pretty sure was 96 but i'm old so i could be forgetting)

the main forum i went on back then was nme angst board. and i probably went on hideyuki japanese echobelly site a bit more than anyone probably should have. i also used to write down web addresses in a notebook with the http://www bit in them because i didn't really know how it all worked. despite this initial confusion (which lasted um...a lot longer than it should have) i am now a web developer. WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT.

i tried to ignore it for ages. think i went on an Ooberman chatroom and maybe browsed the Idlewild website in 1999, but i didn't really give a fuck. plus everyone in school prattled on about email groups that seemed to descend into friendship-annihilating rows on a weekly basis, so i decided it was a TOOL FOR EVIL and MUST BE AVOIDED

didn't really start using it til i got into halls in uni, and realised email was pretty good. sorta went on from there, i guess. these days it seems like it's always been around

First saw the internet in about 96/97, I think, on a friend's computer. It was quite disappointing cos I'd just finished reading the William Gibson neuromancer series of books and everything I'd heard about it said it was just like that. I think I looked up some Talulah Gosh lyrics.

First got it at work in about 97. We had one machine connected to the web and you had to get written permission from the company director to use it. For email, we had to write it out on a piece of paper and give it to one of the secretaries who would type it in and send it and them bring a printout of the reply to your desk. This was an IT company. A similar procedure was used for writing word documents!

At my present company we didn't get internet access until about 2002/3ish. We did have email but only internally and when I first joined in 1999 access to that was restricted. I remember being told how lucky I was for being able to get email access after only being there for a year. But not long after that they rolled it out to everyone.

I got internet at home in 98 - Compuserve initially. Funny how now couldn't live without it.

Internet at work in 1995 and I got it at home around 1998. The Get Right download manager was my friend in those days when downloading 128 k/bit tracks from mp3,com!

I think I was on email about 1994, and joined a billy bragg mailing list (which I got chucked off of by "communist" Americans who thought they were the most oppressed people EVER) and a blur mailing list (full of teenage girls who had got into Blur about a week AFTER me and so looked up to my KNOWLEDGE). Then I joined the uk-indie mailing list and THE WORLD CHANGED and I suddenly knew about 50% of the total population of internet users at the time.

Then the internet went full colour and became RUBBISH.

I don't think I'd heard of the internet until about 2000 when I first worked in an office, but I wasn't allowed on it. My first go on it was in a hotel in 2003, I paid 50p for an hour of internet access but gave up after 10 minutes of nothing exciting happening because I had no idea where to start. I started working at the Council in 2004 and that was my first chance to go online, but for about 3 years all I did was read Bradford City news and go on ebay. I got dial up at home in 2004 and broadband in about 2006 I think.

I think this is the first and only forum I've ever posted on actually. I didn't know things like this existed. I've clearly led a sheltered life.

I started posting on the playlouder forum... does anyone remember that? I think there was seven of us and thousands of very soon to be alienated and hate-filled first-time/one-time posters...

new poster: any idlewild fans here?

playlouder regular: CUNT!

playlouder regular2: MASSIVE CUNT!

playlouder regular3: fuck off idlewild cunt!

playlouder regular: idlewild are for cunts!

me: I don't really know a lot about them

playlouder regular 3: CUNNnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnTTT!

that was pretty much how that year of my life played out... I joined bowlie just to escape sight of the c-word (little did I know that...)

i got pretty swiftly addicted to the gigwise forum, which doesn't seem to exist any more

gigwise hadn't moved to london by that stage; it was still liverpool-based and dividing its time between local bands and NME type stuff. it wasn't particularly exciting, in retrospect. every few months there'd be a 100-page thread with furious debates about what punk actually meant; aside from that it was just divvies arguing about whether zombina and the skeletones were better than some band who were into U2

great days

I think we got internet at my parents around 96/97. I wasn't really allowed to use it as it was pay by the minute and Daddy was a tightwad.

When I started college in 1999, I was able to spend most of my lunchtimes on the internet and then when I started university in 2001 I was able to spend most of my life on it.

I was online from 1993 at uni. I set up what I believe to be the second ever Pet Shop Boys fan page on the web, the only remaining evidence of which that I can find is in this 1994 signature from a usenet group...

My first account in 95 was a compuserve account with those funny numbers.

I emailed a Mary Chain fan site set up by what I found out to be a school kid in Australia. The person I emailed is now one of my best friends and we even shared a flat when she lived in London 12-13 years ago.

Our tiny Primary School amazingly had 1 computer on the internet in 1994. I think all we pretty much did on it though was send e-mails to kids in a school in Australia.

When I was in 1st year at High School in 1995 we had an activity week at the end of term where every day you did a different activity such as football or squash or something arty. One of the activities was "the internet" where we sat around in front of a computer and gave the teacher names of websites to look up and then sat patiently while they loaded for 5 minutes.

I think we got a Demon dial-up account at home in about '96 and the first sort of "community" I got involved in was the Divine Comedy "Europop" mailing list. My Mum eventually instigated the placement of a notebook beside the computer where you were supposed to write down the length of time you had just spent on the internet. Probably as a result of the phone bills that were mostly run up by me and I imagine also in the hope that it would not leave the phone line engaged for quite so many hours a day!
