Android

Post by Final Loan » Fri May 21, 2010 16:19

I've got an Android phone and I know that Pete's just got one too. So I thought I'd start a thread for 'em. So we can share which apps are good, etc.

Think the prize for the most-useless-but-utterly-cool goes to the Tricorder app. Not sure why you'd need to know about solar flares or other such features but it DOES look like a Star Trek TNG tricorder... which is undeniably cool in a ridiculously geeky way...

I can't stop playing Word Up! It's been getting in the way of me doing useful things today instead, like posting on Anorak.

I think I'd like an Android. The fact that you can easily write your own apps for it appeals to me and also the fact that it's all written in Java which is what I do at work but I'm not sure I can afford one as I'm on a pay as you go phone and I am a bit worried about being sucked into the Google-empire...

Spookily, I got a call off the phone company today because I'm due an upgrade in a couple of weeks, and they offered me an Android phone. And for the first time ever I didn't panic and say yes straight away but bravely muttered, "I'll think about it". Are they any good then? The one I can get is a Samsung Galaxy. Or something.

Don't ask me about different kinds of phone or nuffink. I really like mine though!

Turning your phone into a torch and a guitar tuner and stuff is like something from another world. My mind is blown. This is total witchcraft.

I was going to put a serious point at the end of that post, but I thought I might ruin it. Anyway, I actually am thinking about an Android phone, would anyone like to recommend one that I might be able to get on a not-too-pricey contract? I know nothing.

The one I'm looking at for when my contract is up in July is the HTC Desire, but that's pretty much top-of-the-line at the mo...

Vodafone gave me an HTC Tattoo on this price plan. I've heard all good stuff about HTC phones; somebody reckoned the touch screen on mine (which is probably bottom of their range) isn't that good but it seemed alright to me when I had a play on it in the shop, so I thought why not eh.

I got an Android phone two weeks ago. Hello thread! I'm totally lovin' it. I'm always getting lost so to have that baby around and be able to whip it out for the maps feature is hella useful. As it is if I need to find a shop or pub or restaurant nearby when I'm somewhere new. So so handy.

I got thee phone Your Funny Uncle mentions, the HTC Desire. Martin's a real gadget nerd and he says it's as good as, or even better (more powerful he says) than his iPhone. I don't know about power but it's just great and full of handiness. The Tattoo sounds well 'ard. Go Pete!

What I want, though, is an app equivalent to the iPhone's 'hipstamatic' picture app. Any out there?
There's more than one use for every part

I called up O2 and demanded an HTC Desire today, threatening to leave them if they wouldn't out-do the deals offered by other networks, and they just said that they didn't have any in stock and I'd have to try again next week. I'd spent hours building myself up to be a hard-ass deal negotiator, as well.

Yeah the only thing the iPhone 3GS has over the HTC Desire as far as I can see is the fact that there are currently more apps for iPhone. I have an iPhone at the moment but I'm heartily sick of Apple's overly controlling attitude in general, and having to use iTunes to sync it in particular. I find using any Apple software on Windows to be a horrid experience... My next phone will be an Android for sure, even if it's not an HTC Desire...

Hooray, I've negotiated a better contract and an HTC Desire for less money than I'm currently paying.

Now to discover that I loathe touchscreens.

I love my Desire. It's the mutt's nuts. And I can carry on living life without ever having to touch iTunes... The one bit of advice that I pass on is to make sure you're on a contract that genuinely does give you unlimited internet - I heard horror stories about people leaving the background data function switched on and then being shocked by a phone bill that's gone into the hundreds...

There IS a hipstamatic type app (that I keep meaning to download) called Vignette - you have to pay for the version that uses all your megapixels though, the 'lite' version is only something like 1 megapixel.

I'm also considering getting a games emulator... probably the Gensoid - the mega Drive/Genesis emulator...

i've been looking at the HTC desire and gently caressing the screen. do you know what packages offer a genuinely free internet useage? because they're all far from clear, most of them don't list the internet usage limits or stick them away in the small print.

might wait for the HTC wildfire to come out in a few months as it promises to be a few quid cheaper.
When the people are being beaten with a stick, they are not much happier if it is called 'the People's Stick.'

I'm on the Orange Panther plan. Which isn't cheap - £35 per month - but gives genuinely unlimited* internet, not up to 500mb or whatever it is that some companies call unlimited...

*fair usage applies apparently, so I can't be downloading things all day every day, which I don't anyway.

Downloaded 'Gameboid' last night - a Game Boy Advance emulator - and then a bunch of roms to play on it (mostly Mario games).

Couldn't get the fucking thing to work cos I needed a gba_bios.bin file apparently, whatever that is. Anyway, I've now downloaded now but will have to wait til I get home to put it on my phone and see if that makes it work somehow...
