Nice Campsites?

Post by mimpkin » Tue Apr 07, 2009 9:48 pm

Does anyone know of any nice campsites, preferably for tents only, within about 50 miles of the Nottingham/Derby area? (but not Golden Valley, please.)
Or nice sites anywhere else for that matter.
Ta!

(sorry if there is already a non Indietracks camping thread, I did look but couldn't fine one.)

Fieldhead campsite in Edale is excellent - cheap, cosy and quiet.

Ah, I've read a couple of nice reviews for this place. It looks lovely. And there is a train station nearby.
Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I was going to mention the Edale one, too. The view from there is stunning. There's one near Hope station, too, but I've never stayed at it.

It's right by the road though, isn't it, that one at Hope? Not that there's much traffic, but I bet you get the odd dur-brain bombing down there at 90 on a big motorbike in the middle of the night. Maybe.

There's this one in Birchover as well, which is absolutely massive and you get a lot of Noisy Young People there, but the facilities and the location are good. You might be able to find a quiet spot as well, cos like I say it's absolutely massive.

You'll be missing the rain then :)

I think Edale looks like the one, but its always interesting to hear of any more anywhere in the country.

I can recommend this one in Dorset

You can have open fires! It also has a field that can be hired for large groups. It is also near Corfe Castle and Swanage for all you steam train fans.

I've been to the one at Edale. Near the pub as well.

I camped at Arbor Low once as well but has memories of falling off my bike. (ale related - oops)

Last summer I took the kids to a really lovely camp site at Hulme End beside the River Dove - about ten miles south of Buxton. Not sure if it counts as Stafforshire or Derbyshire. It's quite close ot Arbor Low, The Roaches, etc.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any nice campsites that are easily reached by public transport? I'm thinking about spending a couple of weekends away camping this summer but I don't have my own transport so unfortunately a lot of the more remote campsites are difficult for me to get to. The Fieldhead one at Edale looks ideal. I'm thinking of trying to get to the Lake District at some point too as it's fairly close to here and I've still never been.

I really need to buy a proper tent as well if I plan to do this. My current one is a cheap single skin one that can just about fit one person and a bag, the good thing about it is it's very light but I think I would prefer something a bit more waterproof and with a little more space. If anyone can recommend a reasonably priced, fairly lightweight, 2/3 man tent that would be great too.
I wish I could make this train
go faster than anything
