LIVING IN THE FUTURE: a thread about ace personal technology

Post by humblebee » Thu Apr 07, 2011 11:38 am

Well, seeing as we are now officially LIVING IN THE FUTURE with regard to the awesome mojo that can be performed with smartphones, netbooks, wi-fi and whatnot, I thought Anorak ought to get with the times and have a thread where we can post 'n' boast about our own small victories with personal technology.

Just now, for example, I have been playing mp3s on my phone and, by the wireless modern miracle that is bluetooth, the music has been coming out of the speakers on my stereo! It's pure fucking witchcraft.

There may be something obtuse about setting up this crazy cutting-edge shit and then using it to listen to Abba, but maybe I'm an obtuse kinda guy.

Please share your own beautiful stories.

one time i was coming home on the bus, extremely drunk (on a weeknight, no less) and my iphone went off and suddenly my dad appeared ON THE SCREEN. i thought it was a drunk hallucination at first and i got all freaked out. but it was real. luckily he couldn't see the state i was in and i just said i'd call him when i got home. it felt like the future had truly arrived.

my husband also videoskyped me on his phone the other day and we had a 5 minute "hey! we can see each other!" conversation. it was in the middle of the workday and it was really sweet <3

in summary, after being an iphone hater for the majority of its existence, i've decided it really is the best thing ever.

Does anyone here use Skype a lot? It's always seemed to me like it didn't quite work as well as it should.

The Walkmeter app for the iPhone had me agog last week when I got it. Took dog out for a walk and left the app running, then checked it when I got home. Good god! It had a wealth of stats about my walk, such as the pace I went at on average, and on the map which showed my walk (The Google satellite map no less) it even had the accuracy of when I nipped off the path to let the dog have her swim in the river. Had the exact milage, sexy graphs... everything.

i use it a lot - the picture quality is occasionally pixel-y, but usually it's pretty good! i'm still not over the novelty of being able to see my parents every day!

i also have it on my iphone, and you can make normal (non-video) calls to international landlines and it's super cheap. you can also video skype on the phone if you want! so yeah, i love skype!

I now have an app that gives me graphs of my sleeping. It's main purpose is to wake you up when you're in a lighter sleep cycle (within a 30 minute window) but it also records your movement in graph form to show when you were sleeping deeply or more lightly. Never fails to interest me for some reason!

Oooh, that reminds me - on the train the other week, I set up my phone so I could get the internet on my laptop through it. Skillness!

I have that but after listening back to me breaking wind and saying the word 'wheelbarrow' in a very confused voice, decided it was best I didn't know what I got up to whilst sleeping.

I wrote a song ON MY PHONE yesterday. While watching the football, no less!

It's just a little bleepy short electronic thing, but still! It was fun. I'm going to do more, in lunchbreaks and possibly when I go to the toilet.

Ooh, what software did you use? I downloaded 8Bitone and I can make some brilliant sounds on it, but arranging them into a song is really quite challenging.

I never thought I'd be able to write 8 bit music on my phone, truely this is the future. ;)
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

I used nanoloop - the android version, but I believe the iPhone version is exactly the same.

It's pretty great! I'm working on a few more things on it, might make a little EP.

further to my previous post about skype. i always get a bit jumpy when my mom skypes me, and it's 2pm here and i'm in bed. that just happened. i mean, i got up earlier and washed my hair, but then got back into bed for a bit...and she was like "what are you doing" and i got all flustered "er...i'm...i'm about to start cleaning. was just doing a quick email check" and then she laughed at how funny i looked with a towel wrapped around my head.

that's the thing about skype, people can catch you unawares!

(it still rules though)
