Spawny means jammy.

as one of the admins of this site I'd like you to explain why you think it's acceptable to use the word 'bitch' in the context you have on this thread

you don't have to explain yourself but I'm giving you the opportunity here

i was expecting something overly-defensive but you really argued your case well there.

not sure what to say about last night. always the same, always different - it's just always different, isn't it? which makes me feel I can never miss a gig. they sounded immense. they were tight and in tune, had a couple of charming false starts as Jon was standing in for Kay on bass, David and Jon were having a laugh, Rachel and Anne Laure were dancing, David unveiled his 'rock wig'; it was bloody brilliant.

they played the usual ones off the new album, but fiercer, brought out 'your robert', and got big cheers for 'fists in the pocket', 'you can hide your love forever' and 'gone before we opened our eyes'. 'hard times' always makes me a bit emotional but Gary Olsen's trumpet pushed it, and me, a little bit further. when they played my favourite TVPs song it just about finished me off. But I was fine, alright? I just had something in my eye.

this band are our fucking Beatles

I actually really enjoyed Comet Gain last night... (first time for everything). They seemed to suit that big old room!

I am in no way nerdy enough to do such a thing but I've got this friend who's putting together a 'As Covered By' Comet Gain comp.
so far he's got:

New Order - Love Vigilantes
Biff Bang Pow - She Never Understood
Curtis Mayfield - Hard Times
Dena Barnes - If You Ever Walked Out..
Carla Thomas - I Take It To My Baby
The Lefties - Movies
The Clean - Beatnik
The Godz - Like A Sparrow
Would-Be-Goods - Pin Striped Rebel

and as covered live:

TV Personalities - 3 Wishes
Dexy's - Plan B
Teardrop Explodes - Sleeping Gas

anyone know anything else they've covered live over the years..?

genuinely they did

well, so I believe

here, have a werthers

early on probably about the time of 'holloway sweethearts' I was in the rough trade shop in neals yard and two comet gains came in (I don't remember which ones) but they were chatting to darrell soul static sound (who put out holloway sweethearts) and jamie from lissys (both worked there) talking about a gig the night before and I was earwigging when I realised it was comet gain and also kicking myself for realising I'd missed them play the night before when one of them related how david (*citation needed*) insisted they play 'live forever' and how it nearly caused a right rumpus in the band but play it they did

unless this was a very elaborate joke but it didn't sound like it- nobody launched into a flappy fish gill/hook mouth mime and roared 'pwnd' or 'punk'd' or 'you've been gotcha'd' or anything like that

comet gain also covered 'white noise' by pussy galore on the 'baby's alright' ep

I've seen them do "Viva La Rock & Roll" by ATV and "Ballad of the Band" by Felt live. Maybe others I've forgotten. Probably others they've forgotten.

thanks for that. I love that ATV song, that must have been a special moment.

Live Forever, eh? well it might make the comp, why not, it's a good tune. First solo (well, only) I ever learnt, even if they probably nicked it from the Stone Roses.

I seem to remember it kinda 'emerged' from some other song they were doing at one of their gigs at The Lexington, but yeah, it was pretty great - a perfect choice for a cover really.

I think they sang "forty fags a day" instead of Francs, perhaps in recognition of the single currency, or maybe just for no reason.

ha :)

I guess this is the best place to ask.. does anyone know anything about 'Charlie Clarke', the Julian Cope song that Cinema Red & Blue covered? I can't find it anywhere.
Also, does anyone have the Cinema Red & Blue mixtape they did around the time of the LP release? the online links are broken.

hello Ben, by the way. we spoke at the skinny girl diet gig, I was the bloke in the swell maps t-shirt.

no idea, but one possibility is that they decided to re-title it, i guess (they didn't get the name of the dead moon song exactly right, for instance). this might suggest it's "commin' soon" from skellington.

i'm sure you found this online:
david feck wrote:nobody in america seems to dig the glorious cope - on the record its off its about 1 minute long so i thought lets do a 10 minute acid folk velvets dirge which sadly we edited to about 5 minutes
so you could always go to discogs & search his solo & band records for short songs with a title that sounds possible from the lyrics. fun fun fun.

edit re. V V V -- seem to have mislaid my copy of the lp, but on the cd version there's nothing to suggest that "charlie clarke" is a cover.
