So I've only seen him play once, being 21 and just discovering him last year thats all I could get, and I was star-struck. My bandmates and I came up with the idea to give him a band -shirt, so I did. Was too big for him (a medium if you wanted to know)! Loved that show. It took place at the Dead Herring in NYC. I found it neat that he was manning the merch table for the entire show, and you could just walk up to him and say hi. Damn I was awkward, being star-struck can do that. I really hope his brother liked the t-shirt, haha.

The talking was definitely the best part of his performance. And one person got to do a duet with him, the lucky duck!

Has anyone else given him gifts at shows?

Beat Happening changed my life and they are my all time fave band - Jamboree being my all time fave album.

they can do no wrong and Calvin's solo projects are equally great! :)

regarding that black flag/beat happening show that was posted earlier, legend has it that henry rollins grabbed calvin's crotch during beat happening's set to which calvin retorted, "did your mother ever teach you any manners?" or something along those lines.

CALVIN JOHNSON IS BACK!

Or will be, soon. And this time he's not alone!

Just listened to the new, forthcoming Hive Dwellers album, Hewn From The Wilderness.

The Hive Dwellers are Calvin's new band (http://krecs.com/artists/hive-dwellers/
) and it showcases Calvin Johnson at his best - we're talking Beat Happening goodness here. Not that his solo stuff is not good, far from it, but it's ace to hear Calvin Johnson backed by a band again (well, guitar and super-basic drums).

A few of the new songs sound like classics already: 'The Dignity of St Jude', 'A Woman Called Trudy' and 'Somebody's Phone Is Ringin' spring to mind. There's also a rework of solo highlight 'Sitting Alone at the Movies'. The production sounds better than any Beat Happening album, too - raw, warm, great clean guitar sounds (with occasional tremolo and uni vibe sounds), vintage organ, etc. And Calvin Johnson's voice better than ever.

Calvin said they'll be touring the US in the Spring and they hope to play in the UK...

I assembled a Beat Happening tribute album from various artists' b-sides and one-offs:

No overlap with the Fortune Cooke Prize tribute album. This one has Cub, The Manhattan Love Suicides, TacocaT, The Shapiros, and more.

BMX Bandits do a version of Cast a Shadow. It's lovely but can't find it on youtube.

I just saw a few weeks back Lisa Marr perform some Cub songs, she covered "Cast a Shadow".

Rather old, but I was just listening to this for the first time in a while, and it's still so delightful:

Johnson's new album is co-written and produced by one of the Black Keys and features Michelle Branch on backing vocals.

...what?
