I've never got on with doing it with vinyl - too difficult and the records are too precious and easy to damage. I take cdrs of things I'm going to play often and the originals of cds that I'm only go to play that time. I don't take any cases, just one of those big cd wallet things.

I used to do the CDr thing years ago and as much as I loved putting the playlists and CD's together, I think it's much more fun doing it with vinyl. The down sides are having to lug it all around, the fact you limit yourself like I said but also you narrow the scope of having things people request.

But Jamie's right, we do just play records one after another. I'd look a right tit trying 'disco mix'.
And we just can't wait to make more mistakes and to fluff our breaks, and to stuff our faces with cake.

WOH!

That's all. Carry on.

I play mostly vinyl at No Hands just cos it feels better somehow, but when I'm dancing at someone else's night I really don't care what they're playing from. Is that weird?

Anyway, I don't have issues with having to lug loads of records with me as the nights we run have far too many DJs and I only ever get to play for about 45 minutes. I'm not a vinyl-only DJ though as I also go to the opposite extreme and play some stuff off my phone - we don't have CD decks so if I want to play something that either I don't own or isn't available on vinyl I use that. I have to alternate between that and vinyl as trying to cue up another song on my phone is too fiddly.

I do prefer not to plan my sets though, aside from grabbing particular fistfuls of records on my way out, and I love the way you can start with one record and have to think on your feet for 'what would follow this?' and can end up going from Twinkle to Friends Again to Evans The Death in the course of an hour.

The PANIC of seeing the clock tick away, and not finding the song you want to play next, or worse: not having a clue what to follow it with.

I love that feeling (in hindsight).

Well, I have spent quite some time reading comments on here as we are planning a night of our very own which will light up this postal district or will die on its perfectly formed backside, I don't know which, but that for now seems to be half the fun. In truth we have, in one way or another, been planning this for twenty years or so. Why now? No idea. We have a choice of (at least) two venues, a belief that people will come and heads filled with fabulous pop tunes. We are now armed with your excellent advice. Thanks to all.

And hello to you too! How nice! This seems a splendid place to hang around and has certainly inspired me to push on with the club night. Thanks again.
