buying merch online

Post by alongwaltz » Tue Dec 24, 2013 14:19

I'm interested in perspectives from bands/labels and from customers.

My label's just been doing PayPal links on our site to order CD's/tapes/zines but some people have complained it's too complicated (?!) so I was thinking of moving to a BigCartel account.

What do you use? Or what do you prefer to buy from? Bandcamp, BigCartel, Amazon, something else?

From a band perspective we use Bandcamp. Easy to set up with Paypal and can handle sales of downloads as well as physical merch.

Although perhaps we should say that we haven't looked too closely at the other options out there.....

Bandcamp is my favourite place to buy from online. It's dead easy to use and you can get the music in pretty much any format you want (I like flac).

The (only?) trouble with bandcamp is that bandcamp takes a fee.

That's not a problem for me - the fee seems fair for the service they offer (i.e. a market place, flac downloads etc)

Personally I use a mix of Bandcamp and my own custom shop on the Odd Box site. The custom shop just has Paypal fees to contend with so it's my preferred place to sell but increasingly people are finding stuff via bandcamp so I'd be daft to not to use it/embrace it.
not really here
