Oh it's amazing. I cannot wait to see them in a couple of weeks time - they're my favourite band in the world.

I love the new album but it's not quite as good as strawberry jam which i thought was a masterpiece, great band can't wait to see 'em next week.

Ok, i don't really know anything about Animal Collective at all. I've got the Panda Bear album/mini-album/EP/whatever and i like that, but i keep hearing how amazing Animal Collective apparently are, and i dunno where to start to find out.

Suggestions?

Well, I don't know about anyone else but I would suggest starting with their new album, 'Merriweather Post Pavilion' (out in a couple of weeks), as it seems as accessible, yet as good, as anything they've ever done to me. The previous album, 'Strawberry Jam' and it's accompanying EP, 'Water Curses' have got some absolutely great songs on too, so they'd be equally good to start with. As for older stuff, 'Sung Tongs' is my favourite, but 'Feels' is really good too. That said, my (probable) favourite AC song is Chocolate Girl, from 'Spirit They've Gone, Spirit They've Vanished'.

Hope that helps!

they were absolutely brilliant tonight, a subtle start but it soon built into their heavier stuff. such an amazing band so many different sounds happening at once. Charles Hayward supported who was once part of This Heat who were fantastic. He was brilliant tonight too. Just him on his own drumming and singing and mixing sounds as he did. such a talented guy and good to see him go down so well infront of what was a pretty young crowd.

Yeah, if you like Panda Bear you should definitely try Merriweather... first since that's the closest sounding. I've not really got into it yet, but the others all took me a while too and the perserverance always paid off!

i was going to get the new album to try 'em out, but Strawberry Jam was a bargainous £6 in hmv so i chanced it... and it's ace! Cheers for the tip, folks. Lovely, lovely stuff.

In a way (IN A WAY), it sorta reminds me of SFA circa Guerilla... that mix of deranged Wilson-esque pop and electronic chaos... i know they're coming at it from a different angle though.

It's bloody brilliant in its own right, of course. Thoroughly enjoyable.

It's only a fiver in Fopp at the moment, along with a load of other recent Domino stuff (got Tortoise and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy covers for £2 and Clinic's Winchester Cathedral is a pound!).

The "beach boys" harmonies are my least favourite thing about Animal Collective.

i thought you loved the panda bear album?

the new album is so good it might just make my head explode with joy. i keep getting obsessed with a different song and listening to it on repeat. currently, it's 'in the flowers'.

No!, I really don't love it - I think it's pretty good but I really don't feel like listening to it again to work out what I really think of it.

I have a weird thing where I love the Beach Boys but I don't like it when other people do Beach Boys harmonies. That Fleet Foxes record especially leaves me so cold.

my absolute favourite animal collective song is 'who could win a rabbit' off sung tongs- it's just wonderfully euphoric and askew

I've rather lost touch in the last couple of years with their output and I'm not sure why- I think memories of mercury rev and flaming lips had me sure that animal collective would wrongfoot it and go all 'stadium bland-weird classic rock'- background music for weekend counter-culturists to read the observer to while drinking good good coffee hot off the delonghi

where to start now?

the new album is a massive pop explosion, but still sounds like no one but the animal collective. i don't know whether i'm just stuck in that initial 'being completely in love with an album' phase, but i do think it's absolutely amazing and will probably forever be one of my favourite albums, even once i've stopped listening to it all the time.

I think it's all the hoop-la around this album that's made me think I should get myself back on board with gusto, damn you bet!

I trust your judgement, annie... as for that bocken character... well, let's draw a discreet veil

I would start with either Feels or Strawberry Jam in terms of newer stuff. But as that's about 2/3 of their newer stuff, it;s not that helpful, probably.
