I'll have a pork roll, egg and cheese....the Ween thread!

Post by Jangloid Mark » Wed Oct 22, 2008 8:11 pm

Just did a search for ween...imagine my surprise when I realised they don't have a thread...I thought I better start one pronto...

For those that don't know them, Ween are indie, punk, psych, pop, country, folk, avant garde, rock...
There's even a little jazz & trip hop occasionally...
Very quirky, each album is different to the last...but, once you know them, you'll recognise them straight away....
Someone once said 'they play every genre, and are masters at a a few...'

My favourite Ween album changes constantly, but, probably the most listened to is 'THe Mollusk', a concept album of sorts, with a very aquatic feel...I could actually imagine someone making a film that the album would be the soundtrack to, but, that's probably just me...

probably my all time favourite Ween song is 'Marble Tulip Juicy Tree', from 'Good Ween Satan - The Oneness'...they did an acoustic version of this song when I saw them live, some years ago...it was AWESOME!!!!

Anyway, before I ramble on any further...over to you lot....
Love is a weakness in the knees...it's dangerous on the stairs...

I came to Ween oddly late, considering I was always aware of them, had a few friends who were big fans and was sure they were completely my thing.

Yeah, The Mollusk is probably their most accomplished album although Chocolate & Cheese comes close. As for the earlier scrapier lofi stuff, I really love The Pod. It's deranged!

So yeah, Ween!

I used to love WEEN. Saw them with Kramer on bass at the Riverside in Newcastle in 1990ish. Ace times. I went off them as they got more polished, unsurprisingly.

There was certainly something lost in how... unhinged they were once they started using proper studios. I like it all but I can totally understand how someone (especially you Trev) would favour the early stuff.

Can't stand early Ween myself. I do like the C+C era though. I read a book about it where they came up with relatively rational explanations for some of the really gross songs ("The HIV Song" was apparently inspired by a friend who lived in a crap tourist town who wanted to make all the holiday goers snap out of their dreamworld by running up to them and shouting "AIDS" right in their faces. Or something). Can't help thinking some of it was probably a bit of post-hoc rationalisation to make nice a bunch of dodgy stuff they thought was funny when they were on acid.

I think a little part of me died on the day I could finally listen to "Spinal Meningitis Got Me Down" without shuddering. One I wish I had back.

You are probably right. I was also probably on acid a lot when I was listening to Ween in the early 90s. It's not stuff I can really listen to these days. It hasn't aged all that well and I've kinda grown up and out of it.

They brought ultra-gross/offensive humour to the level of absurdist art, or something.

Yesterday's big news is that they're back together for a reunion show in Colorado next year. Whether this is going to lead to more Weenery isn't clear at the moment. I expect it depends how Gener's handling his issues.
