it was kinda great actually

his voice was shot to hell, and it was almost like he'd convinced himself that he couldn't get the high notes so his throat tightened up for the first few songs. from Rudderless onwards he really warmed into it... the backing band were really good, which helped. i'd love to have seen him with the Descendents' rhythm section though

plenty of old favourites (we got Your Home Is Where Your Heart Is!), then he finished with 'radio edits' of a few songs (considerably shorter version of Into Your Arms, for instance) and Babaganoush by Smudge, then he muttered "ah, my voice is all fucked up" and walked off

Ha! Sounds pretty decent. Yeah, the band is tight indeed - also "rocking"!

he played all my favourite Lemonheads songs (and most of my favourite Smudge songs too), so if you like them you're in for a treat

They were pretty great in Cambridge, though it took a while for Evan to properly get into it. They played Down About It, which is my favourite Lemonheads tune, and the other lads in the band were dead good. It felt like a 'band' rather than Evan plus some guys.

Had a chat with Evan afterwards, he was very pleasant. A bit shy, very polite and charming. At the end of the conversation he said "I'm Evan, by the way", which was a bit funny. I told him he knew full well I knew who he was.

haha. that's brilliant! did he offer you a go on his crack pipe?

Down About It is my favourite song of theirs as well, incidentally

although at the minute i'm hugely warming to No Backbone

If he had any crack he wasn't sharing it, just smoking a lot of fags.

agree with the points about the band, by the way. i hope they stick around for a while. did you ask him about that new record they've been working on forever?

i think one of the things i like about No Backbone, incidentally, is that punk rock dream backing band of Bill Stevenson, Karl Alvarez and J Mascis. amazing

No Backbone is pretty great, although I think I prefer all of the songs on that album (and probably Baby I'm Bored too) when I hear them live, rather than the recorded versions. My favourites tend to be the slightly more melancholy songs though - Favorite T, Outdoor Type, All My Life etc.

I got Hotel Sessions in the post yesterday (was doing some Christmas shopping on Amazon and couldn't resist) - looking forward to giving it a play later on.

So what did you actually think of the Hotel Sessions? I've just been listening to it on Spotify and quite frankly, it's a bit crap isn't it. Also, I didn't realise until today that it was something that was recorded 20 years ago. I'm fairly livid at the cynical attempt to extract some more cash from the back catalogue rather than stop being such a lazy fucker and write some more songs.

I'm somewhere between those two viewpoints! I think it's a an interesting snapshot of some songs that weren't quite ready yet, and I'm glad it exists, but I can't see myself playing it very often.

I'm not really sure where all of yesterday's vitriol came from! Apologies for that. I think I probably agree with what Tom said now, on reflection.

Yes, it's a Michael Hann list, but it's nice that he picked The Lemonheads rather than the usual dull but worthies that populate these things. Reminds me of the teenage days when I'd listen to all the albums in a row and then again and again and...
