They've never troubled the charts and they don't do R n B but I thought this might be the best place to put something for the Futuristic Retro Champions since they have pop at their very core. Electro pop with wonderful melodies, often bubblegum and occassionally slightly more sophisticated (the two songs from the last single could quite easily sit on Robyn's last album I think). Usually about going out dancing though.
Sadly they played their last ever gig in Edinburgh on Saturday (I was at Friday's penultimate Friday one) but they also used that as an excuse to release everything they've ever done. I think it's only available on itunes (they only made 75 copies of the physical CD for gig-goers) but you get 25 songs for under £8 and they're pretty much all pop gems.
These girls should have had their own Monkees style tv show. If they'd used thes songs for the Josie and the Pussycats film then Rachel Leigh Cook might still have a career. Fearne Cotton should be wittering inanely about them on radio 1.
But there you go.

Jenna

Vaselines support slot (presumable gained by having this one filthy song)

Strawberries and Vodka Shots

More Jenna, but the bonus of this being the gig I first spotted them

Anyway, that's The Futuristic Retro Champions. Manda Rin (of twice being on Never Mind the Buzzcocks identity parade fame) said they were the best new band in Scotland. I think they make me happy.

Just perfect for someone with a new club-night to fill full of great songs I'd have thought!
I'm very sad they've split, but apparently the three girls already have plans for a new and and Carla seems to have a few demos of new songs on her vimeo.

There's me, high-tailing it over to Glasgow for gigs at every opportunity - and I go and completely miss this band, right on my doorstep.

Ah well - will just have to keep an eye out for their next musical incarnations!

I think they may have been based in Glasgow by the end but they formed at Edinburgh art school which is why the last gig was there.

I've tried listening to that Katy B record several times, and I'm just not getting it. Not sure what it is, but something just isn't clicking with me. Maybe it's because of the dubstep influences all over it. I'm not a big dubstep fan.

Still, new Florrie EP next week! Eeeeee!

That's excellently odd. I can't figure out if I like it or not. I think the only safe thing to do would be to listen to it LOADS until I'm sure.

Cher Lloyd's album is actually pretty respectable, I would recommend listening to 'Want U Back' and 'Superhero' which are on spotify, better than Nicola Roberts in my opinion. I actually can't stop listening to it. Another current release is Beyonce's 'countdown', the video is great, check it out!

Also, anyone got anything to say about this 'Birdy' girl who seems to be getting millions of pounds worth of promotion?

The new Will Young single's a bit PSBish, I reckon. I like it (and he makes me swoon).

That new Frank Ocean album, "Channel Orange" is really good. Quite heavy on what I believe are called the "slow jams" while not being as heavy and druggy and the Weeknd's stuff. Sexual ambiguity and social commentary and actual thoughtfulness abound in the lyrics...

Been listening to it a bit. Is pleasingly vaguer than 'Nostalgia: Ultra' was, gonna take a few listens I think.

I do rather like this new one from Beyonce's little sister

Also, this lot have been getting a ridiculous amount of hype in a really short period of time, but I really love this track

Dan posted that in 2011, but now Icona Pop's finally hit the Dutch charts a couple of weeks ago. Chart pop doesn't get much better than this, does it?
