I also enjoy this Allen Stone song:

It's got just enough edge and honesty to it, and it's nice and catchy. It comes by on my work radio a couple of times a day, and I always appreciate the change of mood.

I used to think that I wasn't that fussed about "Hideaway" by Kiesza, but now I admire how relatively subtle it is compared other "EDM" inspired pop music. Plus her voice is amazing and doesn't do that annoying, gospel-y running up and down the octaves thing (Plus I really fancy her a bit)

That post brought to you by 2014.

Låpsley isn't 'chart' pop yet, but i can only imagine that it won't be long before she is. this new track is tremendous:

Awww man, they're both lovely songs. Cheers!

I really really really really really like the new Carly Rae Jepson single:

It's not as good as "Call Me Maybe" but then again neither is 99.9% of all human endeavour.

No pop music has really grabbed me so far this year (apart from maybe Years and Years) so I was super happy when the new Carly Rae Jepsen dropped. It gives me all the same feels that I had when I first heard Call Me Maybe.

The CRJ took two listens to go in. Impressive stuff.

I heard this a couple of times a few weeks back and I liked it, but today it's just blowing me away. I can't believe how happy it makes me.

It's the best! Played it at my wedding to a rapturous response.

'Shake It Off' used to really annoy me, until last weekend when I finally saw the light because it came on the radio and it was REALLY LOUD and I got lost in it. See also 'Call Me Maybe'. Oh man. <3

Edit: never not listen to Dan Pop-o-matic

I think that helps sometimes, with the chart pop. If it's just normal volume all I hear is the production. It has to be really loud for me to hear the actual song.

Part of the joy of Shake It Off is the production though. I don't want to hear any scrawny acoustic versions of that!

CBBC had a live Sunday afternoon chart rundown show a few years ago, while TOTP still existed, and the fact I've had to mention it suggests how successful it was in raising the chart's profile.

But now there is no TOTP or CD:UK or Chart Show. It will be the only similar programme on the telly and the first one for years so it's more likely to have an impact. I guess it depends on how much the current generation of children are into music.

Today I have listened to the compilation album released by label/art collective PC Music (twice). I'm utterly enraptured and befuddled by it. Some of the songs on it are amazing (like this one by Hannah Diamond), some are vaguely irritating.

It's like pop turned up to one million.

It seems that the telly people don't believe that young people can manage to listen to more than a minute of a song.

I did think it sounded like a bad idea. Fair to blame the Tory majority I reckon.
