Anyone else keep finding yourself having this conversation with somebody?

"You know, Jonathan Richman. Singer-songwriter bloke. A bit goofy like. Roadrunner. You know."

"Nope."

"You seen 'There's Something About Mary'?"

"Oh, that fella..."

Me too - loads of times. At least it's better than all the other bands I go and see because they've never been in hit movies.

It's Time For...Jonathan Richman is such a lovely album,it's out of print now, think it was on Rough Trade, every song a killer.
We played Upstairs At The Garage, summer 96 ,and he was playing downstairs,we managed to sneak in and see some of the show.Topped a rather surreal day as i recall,we'd just been on Live Tv in Canary Wharf with the News Bunny etc performing our single, then Alison Wonderland was rushed to Hospital with sunstroke after taking pictures of us in Epping Forest,we'd just got on the radio one playlist and heard Simon Mayo say have a Helen Lovely weekend!!!!! .....Happy days.

Am on a bit of a JR kick at the moment - particularly his Modern Lovers albums, which are great!

Have been lucky enough to see him play 4 times now. The first time that I saw him play was at the (now-gone) Edinburgh Venue in, maybe mid-ish 90s. I was absolutely blown away with how great, how compelling a performer he was, with such charisma. Immediately became my absolute favourite live arist.

Fast forward a few years to 2000(ish) at King Tut's in Glasgow. Sensational gig again! Great, appreciative crowd, such that during one of his quieter songs he actually complained about the noise from a spotlight being too loud! It wasn't, but was only conspicuous because of the silence of the attentive crowd. Brilliant night.

The 3rd time that I saw him was actually in Berlin in March 2009. It was actually a bit of a shock. Jonathan seemed a little bit distressed, skittish, fragile, and, coupled with a crowd that seemed to treat him as just a comedy/ novelty act, made for a disconcerting evening - albeit still great to see him again.

The 4th time that I saw him was at Oran Mor in Glasgow in October 2009. Would he be as distressingly troubled as Berlin? Well, the audience response to his opening song (I was dancing in a Lesbian Bar) put paid to that - an amazing response! And here is said performance:

JR still seemed a little fragile, but ended up being in fine form, which was just a thrill to see again.

Oh, and kudos to Tommy too, his erstwhile drummer!

this is the last one i don't have that i feel i need (still haven't bothered with some of the early 90s stuff) - i looooooove 'rockin and romance' so much and i figure this will be the closest one stylistically. still waiting to come across and affordable copy - postage to New Zealand ain't no fun.

I shall see you there, sir.

It's always nice when a gig's pissing distance from home. Especially when it's Jonathan Richman.

'tis!

Only London and France shows on the Vapor Records website at the min, but it also teasingly says "more coming soon...". Dublin would be nice. Really should've gone last year. *kicks self repeatedly*

Seeing JR in Brighton tonight.

"There will be no support act for the gig - Jonathan will be on stage at 7:30 andwill be doing an extra special extended set."

Beyond excited. Gonna have a wee picnic on the beach beforehand if it ain't subzero.

Saw him here last night. It was great, but he only played for an hour, which was a bit disappointing as he played for over 2 (if I remember correctly) when I saw him last year. He was in great form though, really larking about with the crowd and stuff.

Aye, I assembled a Jonathan Richman tribute mix if that sounds appealing to anyone:

All-Jonathan covers by artists including Tullycraft, Rose Melberg, Luna, The Lucksmiths, Horowitz, BMX Bandits, and They Might Be Giants.
