Felt/Denim/Go Kart Mozart

Post by RITH » Wed Jan 02, 2008 10:06 pm

I'm listening to The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories and thought that Anorak needed a Felt thread. For completists' sake I added Lawrence's other bands to the thread title as well.

Winter is the right season for Felt music.

Preferred Denim to Felt, they were my secret discovery at V97 to impres friends with my cool tastes.

Strangely, the tape of Denim on Ice got stuck in my car radio the other day so I'm doomed to listen to it 'til the end of time.

There was a time when I thought Felt were the greatest band to have ever existed. They've got something almost mystical about them. But listening to them makes me terribly sad; there is so much coldness in that genius guitar and that singing. I love it but at the same time it depresses me no end.

But yeah, they were amazing. I thought Go-Kart Mozart were really ace too.

Is your username Felt-related? It's probably been mentioned somewhere before when I didn't pay attention...

I love that song.

But yeah, cold, indeed.

"Forever Breathes the lonely word" is one of my favorite albums.

They said in the magazine "Les Inrockuptibles" when you listening to Felt suddenly you see a little glance of hope, you say "oh! ha!" but the next song they kill you and throw you again in deep despair." Well, something like that.

Me and my poor english knowledge, I always mixed up the meaning of the word "Felt" with the past of fall "fell". But finally, I understand why.

I have to mention this very good site about Felt : http://felt.planetaclix.pt/default.htm

That's fantastic and also dead accurate, I think.

EDIT: RITH, yeah, my username is from the Felt song.

Felt is the best band ever. They're so mystical. The whole ten year, ten albums thing. So much sadness and beauty.

I'd say my favourite album is "Poem of the River", ...but it could also be "Strange Idols Pattern..". I also have soft spot for "Pictorial Jackson Review".

Although lately I've mostly been listening to Monkey On The Moon, which is a fantastic record as well, hinting at what would come with Denim.. I got Back In Denim for Christmas. I think some of it is awesome, like "I'm Against The Eighties" and "I Saw Glitter...", but some of it's a bit meh. It's a good abum though. I've heard some other Denim stuff, On Ice, etc, but I don't think I'll buy that any time soon...

Go-Kart Mozart is funny.

And Lawrence is strange. That, we can all agree on.

yes i remember reading an interview with lawrence and they ran a picture of him with his white gloves on squashed into a corridor full of neatly shelved records. i kind of understand the sentiment - i hate to think of time and fingers bringing my records into a state of disrepair. but then again.

i lied about maurice deebank in my zine.

Are there in Train Above The City fans out there? Any at all?

The reason I ask is that I've recently been kinda enjoying side 2 of Pictorial Jackson Review and thought maybe that means I actually might like TATC.

Maybe I'll just say if I ever find a cheap copy I won't say - plus that would mean I'd have all ten.

I think Train Above The City is okay. I think the b-side of Pictorial Jackson is beautiful, and on Train On The City I really like the bits that sound more like that; ie. the slower/etc. parts. Like Spectral Morning, which is gorgeous. The first half of it reminds me a bit too much of the music from some computer game I played when I was 10 (Transport Tycoon...). If I'm not in the right mood, it can be kind of annoying. But the last half is always quite nice.

Does that mean it sounds a bit like 'Let the snakes...', because that might just be my favourite Felt album.

Nope. I wouldn't say it's like 'Let The Snakes..' at all really... That's all short indie pop instrumentals (and absolutely fantastic), TATC is more like annoyingly bouncy computer game jazz / lovely jazzy slow stuff like Sending Lady Load, etc.

How good is the Ballad Of The band EP?! And the Final Resting of the Ark? And Forever Breathes the Lonely Word? And everything else they ever released? Huh?

I'm in such a Felt phase at the moment. It's all I listen to. Mostly from the Creation years, stuff from 86-87.

It's GOLD.

I think the next record I'm going to get is Maurice Deebank's Inner Thought Zone from 1984 - Dance of Deliverance is on Absolute Classic Masterpieces - has anyone heard anything more?

Do you mean the Creation years, or have I missed something?

Oops!

It's edited now. Let's just all pretend I said Creation all along, eh?

Creation. Creation. Creation.

I wasn't trying to be smart; I probably don't know as much about Felt as I should.

I'm sure i read somewhere that Lawrence isn't allowed to make any more music due to health problems. Does anyone know if this is true?

i went into monorail yesterday and nearly cried out in shock when my usual perusal through the secondhand vinyl boxes produced a copy, in my very own hands and in near mint condition, of me and a monkey on the moon. and it had a sticker on it with £3 on it. still can't believe it; copies of that lp go for like £30 on ebay. there's barely a mark on the vinyl, too.

'i can't make love to you anymore' is one of the most swoonsome songs in the felt canon. i love it to bits.

had a laugh with stephen at the counter when i went to pay for it.

"i see there's a copy of train above the city there, too. you couldn't pay me to take it off your hands".
"yeah, not their finest moment..."

You know, I think Train Above the City would've been quite lovely if they'd only only used a proper piano instead of that silly xylophone sounding electric one... I actually quite like the second half.

£3! I should probably look through those records more often. Mmm, Felt vinyls.
