Oh why did I emigrate! Not really, but I might have to visit for that one.

Lawrence wrote my favourite line ever, the not very depressing "Walter Gropius, man I love your stuff." Someone remind me which song it was... Not many musicians communicate directly with dead architects via the medium of neo-glam synthesizer boogie pop, er, whatever it is. I suppose you have to hear it to fully appreciate it. Right I'm off to buy a Paper Bubble LP and a Vesta Chow Mein.

"Council Houses" off "Denim on Ice"

Does anyone know if there is a new album in the pipeline, given this sudden surge of activity?

Two volumes came out on cd in the early 1990s called Absolute Classic Masterpieces. I think the first one was Cherry Red and the second Creation. I'm pretty sure the Cherry Red one is still available but I haven't seen the other one in a bit. There was also Stains on a Decade which came out in 2003 and is a mixture of both the Cherry Red and Creation years. It's not very good though, I don't think - really strange selection of songs. Anyway, the quick answer to your questions is yes!

Stains On A Decade is a compilation of the singles. I do agree it is a bit strange, though, taking tracks from various EPs and singles seemingly at random. But I like it. There were some compilations released back in the 80s as well - one called Goldmine Trash which includes most of the mega hits from the Cherry Red years and one called Bubblegum Perfume which does sort of the same for the Creation years. Anyway, Goldmine Trash is also easily available on CD, as it was rereleased by Cherry Red in 2005.

I love Bubblegum Perfume because it has a gazillion songs on it and it's nearly impossible to place the needle on the right track.

Hmm, now I feel like listening to a bit of Felt but I can't because my boss loves them and I don't want him to think we've got anything in common.

I have Goldmine Trash on cassette. When you flip the tape it has a compilation of instrumentals on the other side. Dull indie facts......Thanks for reminding me A..Jannerboy. Strangely I have that album on tape too (proper tape, not a C60!)

'Dismantled King is Off The Throne' randomly came on my MP3 player while walking around today at lunch. What a song! How the quiet but beautiful guitar chimes and walks its elegant way around your heart.

Felt Zine!
Me too! I'd heard about it maybe @ 2 or 3 months ago and heard there'd be a little release party at the Hangover Lounge for it but had heard nothing since. So just a few weeks then. And hopefully some rather superb pop musicians playing a Felt song or two. Lovely.

Hello there,
nice to see that you found out about our thing!
The copies should arrive just in time for the launch. Bit nervous still...
With a whopping 160 pages, it got a little bit bigger than expected.
For future information, you might check
http://foxtrotecholimatango.blogspot.com/
Would be great to see some of you at the Hangover Lounge on June 6th. It's for free, and they serve drinks as well, both soft and unsoft.
So you cannot lose really, can you.
Looking forward,
Christian

Oh hello, Mr. Battenberg Cake! We really look forward to seeing the fruits of your labour. I do love a nice superstuffed zine. There haven't been enough around lately. Plus, to have one dedicated to such a brilliant artist, such a group, is a real treat. Can't wait to see it and to see who shows up to play or DJ that day. :-)

From their web site!

May I sing the praises of this lovingly compiled anthology? That's what it is, really. It is much more than a fanzine. It's a beautifully designed 160-page book that is not only enjoyable to read but also to hold and look at. I thought it might take me a while to read through it because I have a lot to read for work. But this Saturday I devoured the whole thing during a particularly long and arduous hair appointment which is rather apt considering how often hair and haircuts are mentioned in the book!

The book contains interviews from years ago with Lawrence, Phil King and a number of band members who played in Felt. There are live photos, press photos, video stills, art pieces, gig flyers, fan photos, and a picture series of a really darling felt material Felt cassette box set! There are first person-accounts from band members and long-ago memories from writers and fans who were around when Felt played live.

Some of my favourite pieces are:

[*] The interview conducted by Chris Heath with Lawrence in 1985 in which Chris got Lawrence to talk about some really mundane and 'Smash Hits' sort of things but the conversation ends up going off in some rather interesting tangents. Chris had set the interview up to be divided into 5 major topics: girls, money, fame, food and Barcelona. These topics were agreed upon with Lawrence before the interview took place but he wasn't too thrilled about it when the interview actually took place!
[*] The short piece from a graphic designer who has worked with Lawrence on his music art work for years. There is an interesting anecdote about wanting to get the perfect font above a bar code but that it messes up the ability to be scanned! She then pastes 4 pages of her work and you see Lawrence's comments all over them. She's got much to fix!
[*] Phil includes the transcript from a 1987 radio interview with a mega excited radio DJ who seems to yell and speak in exclamation marks!!! I was giggling away to myself in the hairdresser's chair, imaging Lawrence giving monosyllabic responses in a deep Stephin Merritt-esque tone to the tweaked-out DJ.
[*] This wonderfully sincere piece by Benjamin Knight from the Tyde where he first gives his love for Felt and then talks about some of his favourite Felt tracks and dissects the guitar parts in them. I'm no guitar player and thus I'm certainly no muso but his wide-eyed sheer love for all the fascinating and thrilling guitars in Felt songs makes me want to listen to exactly what Benjamin writes about. Sometimes he even includes exact times, as in 'Listen to THIS at 2:07!' It's a really sort of sweet and pure American way of writing and I totally love it. I'm seriously thinking of making a mix so I can listen in order to the songs Benjamin writes about.
[*] Paul Becker being the ultimate fan boy and gushing over Lawrence and then getting (or nearly getting) thwacked by Lawrence simply for raving to him about how brilliant he is! Short and sweet and hilarious.

And finally, now I think of Lawrence as smelling of baby powder.

There are just 500 (probably a lot less after the Hangover Lounge release party over a week ago) of these beauties. Go and get yourself one now and support the two wonderful people who put this together.

Enjoying my copy after picking it up at the release soiree:

I loved that radio transcript - really cracked me up! The thing is - the DJ's really did talk and act like that on the local radio stations - in fact lots of them still do.

I wonder if that DJ ever found time to listen to "the Felt"??

All wonderful to hear! :-) I was talking to a super talented musician about this release party back in February or March. At the time I think the zine release party was going to also feature some live music? I'm happy to hear that that will still be going on but as a separate soiree. And if this musician is one of the super talented musicians involved, I know it'll be another fabulous Felt zine happening!
