POWER POP NOW!!!!

Post by Trev » Tue Sep 08, 2015 2:26 pm

Just wondering who people rate who could loosely be termed 'POWER POP' now. So active bands that kinda have that POWER POP thing going on.

I was thinking stuff like this:

or this:

or even this:

You can also recommend bands NOT from Canada. But y'know.

You get bonus points if you can find UK bands doing something similar. And yes I already know about Martha (they're the closest I can think of in the UK that I have heard).

The debut album by Royal Headache (from Australia) from a couple of years back is one of my absolute, all-time faves in a power-pop type vein.

(I haven't heard their recently released new one yet though, so can't be held responsible if it's some 'difficult second album' nightmare.)

Also, not *quite* UK, but The Number Ones from Dublin make absolutely splendid punked up power-pop type stuff.

posted about this sort of thing here before, Trev! here's a good place to start:
me in the Martha thread wrote:there's SO MUCH good power-poppy punk rock out there these days.

you could always look at The Marked Men, one of Martha's favourite bands:

or their singer Jeff's new band Radioactivity:

or guitarist Joe's band Low Culture (with Chris from Shang-A-Lang):

or the totally unrelated Future Virgins. here they are covering The Magnetic Fields:

i guess they're all a bit rougher-edged than Martha and don't really cross over with indiepop as obviously… but the melodies and smart songwriting are all there. i could listen to this kinda thing all day
Also Steve E. Nix & The Cute Lepers, and their sort-of parent band The Briefs

The Number Ones and Royal Headache are defo worth a look too - super-second the above comment - and Sheer Mag. in terms of UK stuff, there's Twisted: http://twistedpunx.bandcamp.com/ and Caramel: http://caramelcdf.bandcamp.com/releases - both fronted by Livi who used to be in Personal Best for a bit.

Prolly think of more later too. Fire reissued the first two Boys albums a coupla years ago; they're obv older but still ace in terms of power pop type punk stuff. And they're still around so i'm just about claiming them as current. :/

Thanks for these. Think they're a little more 'punky' than power-poppy. But they're in the right ball park.

Others I've been listening to are these:

and these:

and these:

They're all less PUNK and more POP. Maybe with a dash of 70s POWERPOP through in.

fair enough. to these ears Mean Jeans tread the line betwixt skinny-tie-powerpop and punk in much the same way as The Briefs or the Cute Lepers, but yeh, i can see how Marked Men or Future Virgins wobble more towards one side than the other. It might just be the context of a punk scene still dominated by Leatherface/Hot Water Music rip-offs that makes this stuff seem like pure powerpop...!

srsly though, get on The Number Ones:

much less new wavey and more powerpoppy in an 'alternative'* rocky sort of way, but i also love Marvelous Mark. probably not what yr after based on the above examples, but ehhhh, i guess powerpop's a pretty broad term:

*(alternative to what, exactly?)
