Hello there. I'm in LA too. Whereabouts in town are you? I'm in that Hollywood, near the Hollywood Forever cemetery gates. (Not sure if Wilde is on my side though.)

I live in LA (Westwood, yeah sucks) and I just found this forum from a link on indie mp3 but it seems really cool. My girlfriend and I have an indie pop night at the Mandrake Bar in Culver City...it's basically on one saturday or so a month...but not in any predictable order.

Anyone in Los Angeles (particularly on the west side I guess) should come to our indie pop night *tonight*. So, we used to be every thursday but we didn't really get the word out (note the incorrect timing on the flyer). We're now on approx two saturdays a month.

Anyhow, it's tonight at the Mandrake Bar (2692 S. La Ciengega) in Culver City. The flyer says it but we'll be playing indie pop and some 60's soul etc. from 9 until around 2. We have been completely inept about promoting the night, hopefully this will help.

well im obvisouly partial so it is a lot of fun...and note that it has been moved to basically happening on the odd saturday...at this point it looks like the next saturday we're there is Oct. 25. Now, that would normally be great news, however it coincides with *another* LA indie pop night that is, in honesty, a superior night out. That being the newly started Hungry Beats:

http://www.myspace.com/hungrybeatlosangeles" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

We went last night and it was a great crowd and the music and dancing was really great. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a drive from the west side, but I'm not complaining as it is so great to have another indie pop night.

Best regards,
-J

Oh and btw our night is 21+ as it's in a bar, but Hungry Beats seems to be in like an abandoned convenient store so it's 18+ I would guess, but also BYOB since it's not even a bar. Note that this *adds* to the fun in my opinion as it can prbly go really late as a result.

OK, so last night after I got home at around 8ish from work I was so tired I pretty much flopped into bed straight away and kissed Friday night goodbye. Now it's 9am on Saturday morning, I've been stupidly lounging around for hours, and I realise I missed what might have been the awesomeist indie-twee-noise show of the year last night at the Smell, with Abe Vigoda, High Places and the brilliant Ponytail.

Even if I had gone to the show, however, I would have gone alone, because my friends and colleagues for the most part have questionable taste in music, and are difficult to coax out to downtown on a Friday night to spend money on bands they've never heard of. Now, there's nothing wrong with going to gigs solo, but isn't it nicer when our musical experiences are also social ones?

What I'm driving at is, we LA anoraks have to start having meetups. Perhaps the next Hungry Beats or the Feral Pop Frenzy aforementioned? Or the Stereolab show in Hollywood in a couple weeks? Let's do this.

I would totally do this...but I'm in San Francisco. None of my friends have similar musical taste to me, either. So, it would be cool to do a similar meetup in SF...I know some folks have talked about this. But I'm not sure where we'd meet. (Not feeling very decisive today at all...) Anybody have a place/show in mind?
Not to steal the LA thunder :-)

The irony is that I have several indiepop friends in SF. Doh! If only I could introduce you to them. Maybe one weekend when I happen to be visiting there'll be a suitable event.

Maybe we should fork this thread into two, for north and south?

Great idea, everyone in the area should come to Feral Pop Frenzy next week if you can help it. If not you should go to Hungry Beats. We'll in general try *not* to have our night coincide with Hungry Beats if we can help it.

My girlfriend and I are still pretty new to the area (or at least it feels like it) and would love to meet more people into indie pop around here (especially since it seems like no one on the westside has any clue along those lines)
