Re: The Mac Thread

I don't know if anybody here is interested, but I've been writing a Mac application recently and I'm looking for people to beta test it. It's a music player, pretty similar to iTunes (but just for music). I've been threatening to write such a thing for a while (although it doesn't quite live up to m...

Re: iPods

Also iPhone OS 4 (beta 1) seems to like eating up battery by leaving everything running in the background. My understanding is that it doesn't leave things running, just keeps them in memory, kind of "frozen". Unless they tell the OS that they have a specific task to complete, in which case they wi...

Kent: Kent Brockman here, with Campaign '96: America Flips A Coin. At an appearance this morning, Bill Clinton made some rather cryptic remarks, which aides attributed to an overly tight necktie. Kodos: I am Clin-Ton. As overlord, all will kneel trembling before me and obey my brutal commands. [cros...

Re: geology and geography

Flowing data made a choropleth unemployment map for the USA late last year, as well as a tutorial on how to make it yourself with Python . Some R users made their own versions of the original map, and another blogger made a tutorial about how to do it for Germany, so today I decided to make a UK ver...

I didn't want to start a new thread just for this, so it's going here, even though only some of them are geography related (wait, what is geography again?) Victorian Infographics . Link found through Flowing Data . (Among the other things they have linked to recently there are a couple of fun ones f...

Re: Nnngh, this...COMPUTER! Heeelp!

Metadata is more flexible than shuffling files about. I really shudder at the idea of micromanaging my ~13,000 music files into folders with a file browser. And even once you've completed the task, you can only file things in a single place unless you want to start making loads of shortcuts between...

Re: The Mac Thread

Does anyone know if a Seagate external desktop drive can be made to work with a Mac? The sad trainee (i.e. the Manager) in PC World gave duff info when I bought one assuring me it would work. It doesn't. It is locked. There are no instructions in the box. The website is useless. Grrrr. if it's just...

Re: Maths Puzzles

Any people who enjoy maths puzzles and computer programming should have a look at Project Euler It has kept me entertained for quite a while (I've solved 94 problems so far, and I'm ranked 9th in all of Scotland, wohoo!). Some of the problems are just about writing an efficient brute force algorithm...

Re: In need of a 'Google fade nuked' logo/clipart

i don't ever go to http://www.google.com but I thought the fade in thing was quite nice. i like minimalist things. having a clean homepage was always one of the the good things about google compared to other search engines. for example: http://m.uk.yahoo.com/ is pretty horrible unless you really wan...

Re: The Mac Thread

It depends what you want to use if for. If all you want to do is quickly launch applications, then it offers little over spotlight or launchbar or google quick search box or the other similar apps For app launching, spotlight is slightly less efficient since it doesn't learn from your searches or ha...

Re: The Mac Thread

So, I'm back using Quicksilver again… I used to use Quicksilver before Mac OS X 10.5 came out. I mainly used it as a launcher/switcher, since spotlight was really slow back then. At some point after 10.5 came out I stopped using it - I got fed up with how unstable it was (I had to add a launchd agen...
