Re: Comic Book Chit-chat

The only new thing that I've bought has been the new Grant Morrison 'Batman: the return of Bruce Wayne', which I'm only buying cos I love both Morrison and Batman. I took against that when looking at it in the shop, so I have not bothered with it - despite loving the Grant Morrison Batman and Robin.

Re: what book are you reading?

I am reading Hard Times by Charles Dickens and The Dome (little name, big book) by Stephen King. I cannot wait to finish one of these so I can start on The City And The City by China Mieville.

Re: The Vaselines

The cover of the Divine song - I suspect they did it from memory without having a copy of the record (or its lyrics or sheet music or anything). That would explain why they ignore the verses and just sing the chorus over and over and over.

Re: shoegaze

I was at a concert last week where this avant garde classical muso tried to recreate the sound of a four-track shoegazine EP, only without all the elements that makes something shoegaze. Nul points.

wow, blast from the past. I am fond of their "Confessions of a Knife" album, though the one after it lost a lot of the hard edge of their earlier sound.

I love TBA! Next to Plus Support and Gig Cancelled they must be my third favourite band in the world.

Put on the glasses! It always seemed like Carpenter didn't really know what to do once he had the initial premise, with that interminable fight just being a way of padding out the film.

I have finally got myself a Shangri-La compilation. It seems like a properly put together one. Wow, they are great!

Ananda Shankar "Sá-Re-Gá Machán". Right now the Indian sensation is onto the bonus tracks, which are sitar covers of Elvis tunes.

at this stage of the game, I listen to so little indiepop that I would struggle to name a favourite current artist from that scene.

Re: what book are you reading?

My initial impression is that while TLHOD is meant to make you think about gender and all that, it is funny how the guy visiting the world of the weirdo androgynous people is really stuck into the idea of rigid gender roles.

Re: what book are you reading?

I've just started Ursula Le Guin's "The Left Hand of Darkness" (so I am notionally reading about four books right now). It is a brainy SF book about this guy who goes to this planet populated by weirdo androgynous humanoids, who randomly turn male or female once a month.

Re: what book are you reading?

hopscotch by julio cortazar the story stops at chapter 50-something where it says "the end". then there's 100 more chapters and a lot of jumping to previous ones. is that book any good? I remember hearing about the whole thing of how you can read the chapters in any order. Now, if the book was done...

Re: School Of Seven Bells

I'm a bit disappointed by them... the album seems a bit bland on a first lesson, while the live show makes them sound like a shoegazing tribute act rather than a band bringing something new to the table.
