Re: what book are you reading?

I was once chastised in the library for attempting to unfold the map on the cover of that book. Fight the power.

Re: what book are you reading?

I found the key to Infinite Jest was enjoying the 'stories' that I liked the most and not worrying too much about the ones I was not so into. There is enough great writing throughout that even when it's somewhat opaque it never drags. Don't expect it all to cohere at any point. Also, do not underest...

Re: The Football

The clock doesn't stop every time the ball is out of play in rugby. It's not like ice hockey where the timekeeper stops it automatically at every whistle. The relevant rules are here: http://www.irblaws.com/index.php?law=5.4 So in football the clock wouldn't automatically stop for every goal kick, f...

Re: The Football

Sheffield Wednesday How will you do? I think there will probably be at least three or four teams that do worse , so not too bad. Ahh, I was pretty accurate. Let's try again. How will you do? Trying not to be over-confident given how well we've started, so I'll say promoted as Champions with 100+ po...

Re: The Football

Didn't Hansen say he was 'distraught' at one point?

And they kept calling Germany 'efficient' too, because they've seen too many adverts for Audis and just can't help themselves.

Re: General Chat About Films And That

Sisters is the best De Palma.

What do any of you know about these films: http://networkonair.com/shop/113-the-british-film-promo ?

The only one I've seen is The Final Programme. Any particular recommendations appreciated.

Re: General Chat About Films And That

I don't think I've seen Suspicion. If I have I should watch it again, clearly.

I did watch Lifeboat today, though. By coincidence I also watched All Is Lost, which is an hour and a half of Robert Redford in a lifeboat, earlier this week.

Re: general reading and book related things

Some of you might be interested to know that all Verso books are half-price until 14th April. This is probably going to cost me quite a lot of money.

Re: poems we like

I've been reading Anne Stevenson on-and-off while on my lunch for the past few weeks. Here is a poem. A Report from the Border Wars in peacetime don't behave like wars. So loving they are. Kissed on both cheeks, silk-lined ambassadors Pose and confer. Unbuckle your envy, drop it there by the door. W...

I willl look into that, as my memory is apalling (see previous post).

As it is, I keep a spreadsheet. That's normal, yeah?

Re: General Chat About Films And That

I ended up watching The Lady Eve for the second time the other day, as I had forgotten I had already seen it. Preston Sturges is quite the cynic.

Recently I have also watched THX 1138 which was awful and Zodiac which must be the longest film ever made, it just goes on.

Re: General Chat About Films And That

I can't for the life of me understand why you would want to watch break-up films if you have recently broken up, but maybe Three Colours White? I don't know but I hope you'e ok. Yesterday I watch Au Hasard Balthazar. http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/4328/mvle.jpg How many other films are there with ...

^^Cheers, I am interested in THE ROOM. It was shown at the Lantern Theatre last year, but I didn't find out until after it had sold out.

Hi doggy.

A Bullet for the General is superb, I will look out for those others.

Tonight I watched the Alan Partridge film. There were a couple of good lines.

Re: The Football

I was a Chris Waddle fan. He had that signature move. Ball out in front of him, feint one way (drop of the shoulder), once the opponent had committed he went the other… didn’t he? Maybe I’m confusing him with someone else. Definitely Waddle. A friend saw him play for Hallam FC the other week agains...

Re: General Chat About Films And That

Some top swearing in A Field in England.

I was a bit confused because I kept expecting it to turn out to be a Sealed Knot style Civil War reenactment gone wrong, but it wasn't.

Re: General Chat About Films And That

And the prisoners probably would have mobbed the camera crew to get at their water supply. I watched PP yesterday, and being unable to suspend my disbelief w/r/t this particular fact really spoiled my appreciation of it. I also watched Unmann, Wittering and Zigo, which is about a bunch of boarding ...
