Re: The Cricket Thread

so, kudos to the aussies for putting the arrogant us to shame, and completely outplaying us for 8 days in a row! still wildly entertaining test cricket, but what a disappointment for me! as to the referral system - i've come around to the "it's definitely not working" school of thought BUT: the solu...

Re: haruki murakami

same here - though i love him to bits, i found "hard-boiled" quite hard to get through... which is not to say i didn't like it in the end! and i generally like the double-story alternation device in literature: perec's w, or the memory of chidlhood is a great example, and brautigan used it at least ...

Re: The Lucksmiths

i've been listening to "first frost" for a good while now, and it's just getting better and better (for me). maybe because it's a little more introspective and melancholic, but at first it didn't grab me as much as "warmer corners" - now that it's had time to settle in though, i think it's an absolu...

Re: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

not sure if this has been mentioned/noticed yet, but i was on the hype machine over the weekend, and on their "most blogged artists" tag cloud, POBPAH were 3rd!
that's massive on an aggregator as popular as the hype machine!
well done POBPAH on taking the world by storm! :)

i knew there was a reason i was scared to post that!

still, as comrade lenin* said: "all power to the soviets" ;)

*ps - were you aware that the arcade fire has written a song called "lenin"?

i always seem to have either one of 2 records on when i'm doing the dishes - and i've no idea why, it's just an urge:

Re: what book are you reading?

I kind of finished the language book (Nicholas Ostler's Empired of the World ) that we talked about earlier on this thread; I skipped some bits about languages where I didn't know a lot about the context; I really have to go back to these chapters. It's an amazing book and I'm really glad I've read...

Re: what book are you reading?

isn't ali smith great though? i've always loved her short stories, but for some reason wasn't able to get into either the accidental or hotel world (though i should probably try again. i read boy meets girl (her instalment in the canongate myths series) last week though, and it's absolutely lovely! ...

Re: what book are you reading?

GUARDIANS OF POWER The Myth of the Liberal Media by David Edwards and David Cromwell is this any good? i love a good media critique. the reviews seem to suggest it's based on herman and chomsky's manafacturing consent. i can't work out if it's direct update of herman and chomsky's manafacturing con...

Re: Film and Television Literature

i'm very much a lay person with this stuff, and it's not an academic book by any stretch, but chris turner's planet simpson is marvellous, not just as love letter/paean to the simpsons, but as a sort of popular culture history of the 90's

Re: The Cricket Thread

a tad embarassing, yes... but from a non-partisan point of view, isn't it great and exciting that the windies seem to be putting together a decent team again? the game is so much richer when there is a good windies team lurking around! i'm a little undecided about the referral system - it sure makes...

i've got the library reissue of songs for girls to sing , but i haven't seen the one you've got, so can't really compare them. as to sleevenotes, i can tell you that the library one has a lovely, lovely story (well, a real one, as far as i can tell) by a fan in, specifically about "until the end of ...

GUARDIANS OF POWER The Myth of the Liberal Media by David Edwards and David Cromwell i've got this too, and am slowly working through it (for slowly, read "in short bits with long pauses in between"!) and it makes me rather angry. okay, the 2 davids are quite smug, and i don't (obviously) have as m...

i - for one - am glad the 20/20 is over (not just because we lost). maybe i'm getting older, but i don't find them entertaining at all. it was a bit funny in the second one, when (for about 4 balls) it was the 2 morkel brothers bowling, at the two hussey brothers... it felt a little bit like backyar...

he must be more injured than he looks then... (isn't he just a very entertaining cricketer to watch though?) it's true about the aussie attack - which is why i'm if anything a little disappointed that we DIDN'T win 3-0. i also found it a pity that - as far as i could tell, though i mostly watched ju...

Re: The Cricket Thread

No cricket chat for a month? Poor thread. i manfully blame myself... and andyroo even from a very biased view, i have to say the sa-aussie series was a cracker, and not just because of the result, but i think there was hardly a dull session in the series, and it really could have gone either way go...

a lot of girl groups are rather twee, aren't they?

the chiffons - sweet talking guy
the honeys - he's a doll/the one you can't have
(can't remember) - my bobby's back (covered in an oh-so-saucy way by A Smile & A Ribbon!)

etc.
