Re: Bristol

I've been living in Bristol for a few months now and I've attended a disappointing number of gigs or indie-ish nights which aren't generic NME things, any suggestions?

Re: recording on computers

Logic is good but it occasionally freaks out for no obvious reason. Hmmm, what system are you using? My Logic only freaks out if I turn on/off my m-audio while it is expecting to use it... so I stopped doing that. Errors like "Audio and MIDI could not be synchronised" and things like that, I've bee...

Re: recording on computers

It sounded like a great idea at the time, but I was pretty drunk. I just like the idea of making music with people without actually having to meet new people or leave the house, I'm not the most sociable person. Why do you use Reaper? Primarily the price, or for its features? It seems interesting. I...

Re: recording on computers

does anyone know of a website for online musical collaboration? i think it would be really cool if there was a site where people could upload an unfinished song and see if anyone could add required parts or just finish it off. even though long distance music making doesn't seem to be the best way to...

Re: The Football

Just to carry on what people were talking about switching teams... My brother switched from a Manchester United supporter to being a Chelsea fan just about when Chelsea got rich. It still hurts now, but to be fair, he was only 10-ish. I genuinely don't understand how anyone can switch allegiance at ...

Re: Amps: the bit the music comes out of

Speakers: the specific bit of the amp the music comes out of Does anyone have an opinion on speakers, specifically Celestion V30s? I'm eyeing up some for my Twin. This is what my broken Laney mentioned in the last post had before I put it in my little fender, the 10" version if you get different si...

Re: Amps: the bit the music comes out of

I used to have a Laney amp, it broke and I bought a Tiny Terror with the intention of fixing the Laney one day. That's basically not going to happen since it broke about two years ago, so I've decided to either use it or get rid of it. The speaker in there is fine, it's not a good one, just a 10" fr...

Re: Is running a record shop even remotely viable these days

Yeah, that's pretty much what I feared and expected to be honest. 30,000 titles is possibly a bit too much to keep in my mum's garage... Maybe I'll try and sell some used records on ebay on the side as a starting point and see how it works out. But I kind of think that if there was any time to attem...

Is running a record shop even remotely viable these days?

Firstly I realise this is ludicrously ambitious/ unrealistic/ naïve, and it's largely a pipe dream fuelled by watching High Fidelity too many times as a teenager and spending half my life and more than half my money in record shops... but running one has been an ambition of mine for years, is it eve...

Re: Anni Rossi

I'm a big fan of Rockwell, originally only got it because I'm a geek for anything involving Steve Albini (who recorded it), I love how realistic and live it sounds without it being lo-fi at all. My friends think it sounds like Regina Spektor, which made me very angry.

Re: Mark Linkous

Normally the death of someone I don't know doesn't affect me too much no matter how much I like their music, but that is genuinely really upsetting. I think it's made worse as his music as always been something I've turned to try and find relief from my own depression, or even just to wallow in it. ...

Re: Guitars

that's a nice guitar, i like how it's a strat but not quite a strat... exactly the kind of thing i like.
i imagine any USA made fender is going to keep a decent amount of value... i know japanese made guitars from that period go for quite a bit, not that that's much help.

Re: Bass Guitars

Yeah, I think I'll check out a few bass amps later in the week... any particular recommendations?

Even a few plectrums is almost out of my budget right now, so I won't be buying anything for a long while, but I can dream.

Re: The Football

Does anyone here follow any teams in the conference south? I'm a massively fair weather Newport County supporter... I haven't been to a game since I was about 12, I only just noticed that they have a 24 point lead at the top of their league. I really hope they get back in the football league before ...

Re: The Football

That really is a terrible injury and as a supporter of the Welsh team it's a real shame it's happened to Ramsey. I hope it doesn't hold back his progress, definitely a promising player. But I'm slightly annoyed by some Arsenal supporters/ Arsene Wenger saying that Arsenal are victimised and teams ar...

Re: Bristol

So what is Bristol like these days? I grew up about 20 miles from there just over the welsh border but always visited Cardiff way more often, and I only get to one or two gigs a year there now. I'm moving there in the summer with a few others, I'm worried that I'll miss the number of great gigs ther...

Re: Bass Guitars

Welcome to bass playing - I hope you enjoy it when you've sorted out the niggles you have. If you swap out the strings you'll notice a difference, but I don't think it's the right difference. You can expect a twangy tone, which most people would suggest is too bright. This will fade after they have...

Re: Bass Guitars

I don't really play bass, but my band's bass player is getting bored of it so I'm taking over a bit so he can play more synths. I've borrowed his jaguar bass, it's such a beautiful looking thing but the sound is so underwhelming... i just get a poorly defined mid-rangey kind of tone. If it was a gui...

Re: Guitars

I would marry literally anyone if it meant getting one of those as a present. They are incredible. Though it depends if this person wants to make a load of senseless (but incredibly fun) noise as well as having a great fuzz pedal. The zvex mastotron doesn't do as much crazy stuff, but is just as goo...
