Re: Comet Gain

Hello Michael and Andy - just dropping in quickly to say thanks for the links to and quotes from blog etc - I'm genuinely humbled to know that some stuff I wrote resonates with someone to the extent they'd dig it up again a few years later. (It also makes me feel bad that I've only managed about two...

Re: POWER POP NOW!!!!

The debut album by Royal Headache (from Australia) from a couple of years back is one of my absolute, all-time faves in a power-pop type vein. (I haven't heard their recently released new one yet though, so can't be held responsible if it's some 'difficult second album' nightmare.) Also, not *quite*...

Re: Music journalism (or what's left of it)

Next time you see an indie band get excited about getting a withering review in the NME ('but, even so, it's still a review!'), remember this, recognition from the NME is about as useful, helpful and happening as having Nicolas Witchell describe you as 'merely palatable' Whilst I'm generally not mu...

Re: Why did Nirvana suck so much?

Hmm, those liner notes are an interesting read. I don't remember my old CD of 'Incesticide' ever having any liner notes - if it did, I'm sure I would have read them with obsessive interest and probably started saving my pocket money for a Raincoats album, so shame I missed out. With all the twenty y...

Re: 28/01 London: Giant Burger / PAMs / Flemmings

Hi Carys!

I don't know stage-times yet I'm afraid (I'm not organising this one), but I would guess first band on at 8:30, probably?

I'll update here if I hear anything more solid in the next few days.

Would be lovely to see you there anyway...

Re: Your Indietracks 2015 Wishlist

In addition to my usual annual litany of geographically/economically unlikely big hitters (Jonathan Richman, The Bats, The Clean, The Feelies, Shonen Knife..), let me also suggest the following slightly more realistic contenders: Habibi Charla Fantasma Cat Smell Ethical Debating Society Flemmings Do...

It'll...

Re: Don't Make a Scene: a field guide to putting on DIY gigs

I'd dispute the not putting on more than 3 bands thing. I love 4 band bills, both as a punter and a promoter. Totally agree with that. The venue I used with Sleeping Today asked us not to do four band bills anymore because of the effect this has on the sound engineer and the stress it may cause the...

Re: LDN 17/11: Flemmings / PAMS / Charla Fantasma / Cat Smel

Thanks Victor! Really glad you could make it along, and sorry I didn't really get a chance to chat. Thanks in fact to everyone reading who came along - it was a really fun night, and a great turnout for a Monday. Next Flemmings / PAMs outing is of course next Tuesday ( see other thread ), and if it ...

Which is tomorrow!

By way of "doing the bump" whilst also providing something useful, here are the rough timings for tomorrow (obviously subject to change if anything goes awry):

8:15 > Charla Fantasma
9:00 > Cat Smell
9:45 > PAMs
10:30 > Flemmings

Darn, I was just about to start this thread. Beaten to the punch! Now with confirmed appearance from Cat Smell anyway. Yay! If anyone's thinking of coming along, make sure to get there early, because Charla Fantasma were absolutely wonderful at their public debut at a house party last weekend, and I...

Hi Marianthi - sorry, only just saw your message, and, um... un-helpfully enough I have absolutely no idea what the timings are for tomorrow or what order people are playing in. Sorry about that. Anyone else got more info?

Re: The shred your cred thread

Ok, brace yourselves folks, but it suddenly occured to me the other day that I really fucking love 'Sultans of Swing' by Dire Straits, no disclaimers / apologies needed. That sort of smooth / choppy clean-toned guitar playing, the tight '60s r&b type backbeat and the central riff all appeal to me gr...

Re: PAMS

Hey everybody - big couple of weeks for PAMs, so I thought I'd put in my usual bit of half-arsed self-promotion. As well as the exciting TOUR mentioned above, we've also finally got our recordings from last year up on bandcamp, and furthermore we've succumbed to the trend of the hour and put them on...

Re: Anti-Pitchfork 'Albums of the Decade' so far

V/VM - The Death of Rave Never thought I'd see the day when V/VM met Anorak! I have a big smile now... Yeah, I was a bit torn over whether to treat that one as a "new release" to be honest, because as I understand it it's an LP comprised of newly edited chunks of some vast pile of recordings that V...

Well, I've got a ton of unanswered emails to get through this morning, but nonetheless, I can't resist a fucking good list, so here's my best-of-the-best since January 2010 in alphabetical order: The Bats - Free All The Monsters Bong - Beyond Ancient Space Bong - Mana-Yood-Sushai Chain & The Gang - ...
