Re: Gmail users

As of this week, GMail is no longer beta. So if it stops working, we can all complain to Google and demand the money they've made through us clicking on their ads back.

Re: what book are you reading?

I just finished a book called A Short History of Tractors in Ukranian. It was fun, totally daft, but nothing spectacular. I think that's a very good description of the book. It was really funny at times, but I have never been very interested in reading the two novels she has published since. I read...

Re: Tour de France 2009

Yes! I couldn't find any live stream -- Dutch TV didn't let me watch it, even though I was using a Dutch proxy -- so I was listening the final kilometres on the Dutch radio. I wouldn't have bothered if it was going to be yet another bunch sprint. As for Gesink, I had actually been thinking yesterday...

Re: Indietracks 2009 Line-Up Announcements

Cats on Fire clashing with Camera Obscura clashing with Alaska is a tiny bit sad, but I was looking at the schedule and there are all these bands playing that I had forgotten about and then I realised it's just over three weeks to go and while I'm going through my least indiepop phase in at least a ...

Re: Nnngh, this...COMPUTER! Heeelp!

I have plenty of disk space left i think. C:drive is at about 145gb out of 190 and f:drive (boot) at about 17gb out of 25. I think its probably a memory issue but dont know how to check this. Ctrl-Alt-Del, then choose 'Task manager'. In the 'Processes' tab, you'll find all your running processes an...

Re: The Football

Given Grimsby's 2008-09 season, one could wonder who came up with the idea of putting the pictures on the mug the right way round. So Exeter's first game to the season is away at Leeds. As 60539 people in 5719 threads have said on the fans' forum, this is two years after we were in the same league a...

Re: what book are you reading?

ooooh, a new Ishiguro. i didn't know about that. though, living in japan has completely put me off murakami, so maybe it has put me off ishiguro, too. But there aren't many similarities between them, other than that they're both Japanese-born male authors, are there? I always think of Ishiguro as v...

Re: Help with HTML

It's for coding in the Firefox extension, Stylish, so, as far as I'm aware, it can't use PHP. For the same reason, I can't use a Javascript code to do this.... Well then, no, you can't do it purely using CSS. Well, my second solution would still work, as long as you have a website to host the image...

Hurray! Of course, awards like this are next to meaningless and show more about fans' willingness to vote twenty times, but it is nice to see managers who do well with a moderate squads occupy the top places.

Re: what book are you reading?

I read Tolstoy's The Death of Ivan Ilyich , which is somewhere between a novella and a short story. I had never read anything by Tolstoy, but kept coming across his name as a reference, both in literary and philosophical context. This is a brilliant satire, about a Russian magistrate who is living w...

Re: Let's talk about something interesting: podcasts

Because I was (and still am) so excited about The Philosopher's Zone , I browsed the ABC website for other podcasts and came across The Book Show , which is a daily program about books. It is really good too and very well-produced. Also, each item can be downloaded individually, so that you don't ha...

Re: Help with HTML

Can you use PHP, Mark? (As in: do you know PHP and can your server deal with PHP?) For one solution would be to put the CSS in the document itself (if you haven't already done that) and make PHP choose the image like this: body, .photo, #nonfooter, #booklet { background: url(" URL <?php // some PHP ...

Re: Comput(bleth)er

I have a work-owned laptop here where for some reason no PDF reader is installed. Which is well annoying, for it means I have to forward PDF files to my Gmail and then open it on another computer. But I just realised you can actually open PDFs in Google Docs. Yay, Google

Yes! I was kind of susprised that people hadn't mentioned it here. I'll try and scan the article in a little while, seeing as Colin might like that.

Re: Alfreton Travelodge

Some sort of Taxi organisation would be good - it was very hard to get a taxi from Butterly to Alfreton last year, we had to rely on the kindness of strangers picking us up as we were forlornly walking back on the Sat night. Although we did manage to pass on the Karma by picking someone else up whe...

The Circus was booked for the dates we're staying in Berlin, but we found another nice hostel-hotel-thingy . (Tip for if you're going to stay there; it's loads cheaper to book via a booking site like booking.com.) Really looking forward to seeing the Lucksmiths but also to spending some days in Berl...

Re: The Football

I'm very happy for Burnley. And for Gillingham. And for Torquay. No anorakee-supported team seems to have lost a play-off final this season. It's also kind of nice that 7 our of the 12 original Football League teams will now be in the Premier League. I was looking at which Dutch teams where playing ...

Re: Norway

It's seven or eight hours by train from Trondheim and even longer than that by bus from Tromsø. I'm not saying these routes aren't worth taking -- they really are -- but it might be cheaper and will definitely be easier to catch a connecting flight from Oslo (or any other major Norwegian airport) to...
