So You Think You Can Dance

Post by cuppie » Fri Jun 06, 2008 03:08

Hello I'm so excited! They just picked the top 20 dancers and in the long and glorious tradition of this show, nearly every one of the girls' names is ridiculous or is just spelled ridiculously. There's a Chelsea and a Chelsie, and there's a Courtney and, in the most offensive of all girl's names this season, a Kourtni. I think that's how it was spelled. I spat out my water when it flashed across the screen. And there's a Comfort and a Kherrington. And apparently some dancing too. I can't wait for the show to really start. This show is so much better than American Idol. It's like a celebration of youth and dance and energy and is a display of all the beautiful and weird things the human body can do. American Idol on the other hand, is mostly just crimes against music.

I love this show because it answers the age-old question: can ballerinas crunk?
Q: I know you are, but what am I?

I almost watched this last night--I have never watched a talent reality competition thingy unless you count Project Runway. Instead I watched a very confusing and earnest episode of NOVA about ghost particles(?) or some shit. I passed out immediately. I love a good dance off as much as the next guy/gal but I dunno if I can face the glitz and glamour. I like it more erm...street.

If they ever air a competition of those super-funky drumcore high-school marching bands, like on ESPN or something, you must contact me IMMEDIATELY. I fucking LOVE those bands. In fact, I'm going to go and pronounce my love in "best things ever."

But some of them are street! Some of them are just people who pop and lock on the street and they try out and then before they know it, they're learning how to do the Paso Doble and the Viennese Waltz! And sometimes they're really really good and it can make a person very emotional. Then there was this kid, for whom the judges had high hopes. But he crapped out after he had to do some choreography, which kind of stink for him, but brings me to my next point. And that it that Nigel Lithgow is really annoying. If they don't say exactly what he wants them to then he chucks them.

YAY! a SYTYCD thread! I love this show and I love talking about it.

It totally makes this person very emotional. Gawd, I can barely get through an episode without getting a big lump in my throat. When the judges are just blown away or when they're just so proud of the dancers, it gets me every time. And I get really proud of them and I don't even know them! It's so much more emotional that watching any other kind of talent show, because an amazing routine connects with you immediately. I know next to nothing about dance technique, aside from what I've learned watching this show, but still you know something brilliant when you see it. And the talent these kids have is just astounding!!

I was upset that the Gene Kelly/Fred Astaire dancing guy didn't make the top 20. He was an early favourite of mine from the auditions. There was only a few shots of him during Vegas week, sadly.

I think my favourite right now, based only on the little we've seen, is Comfort. I'm looking forward to getting to know them all though, even if there doesn't seem to be a hot male Russian ballroom dancer.

I just witnessed the most terrifyingly horrible (not horrible in a good way) dance troupe competition show on MTV. I dunno what it was called and I was on a treadmill listening to music but man it was shit. They looked like Kids Incorporated or something. And the judges were, like, tier-3 people from 90s boy bands. I'm very much hoping it's not So You Think. It can't be if it's on MTV, right?

that sounds like it might be Randy Jackson's America's Best Dance Crew. I never watched it, but I saw a bit of it flipping one day and it looked terrible.

Was it hosted by Mario Lopez?

Ha! I was debating posting about that show here because I've been watching the live auditions for this season all day.

So far, I like Super Cr3w the best.

Yes, come to think of it, it was. Oof, the ones I saw looked, seriously, like local access footage from a junior high talent show--yet they were highly praised from the facial expressions of the judges (mercifully, I was plugged into my mp3 player).

Drumline was on TV earlier tonight. I'm taking it as a sign that soon my (atheistic) prayers will be answered and someone will make "So You Think You Can Drum?"

Is America's Best Dance Crew really any good? I really only saw it for a bit and it seemed like an odd format. I might have been a bit biased too because I don't like Randy Jackson at all and I hate everything American Idol. Even though SYTYCD is like a sister show to Idol, it's soooooooo much better.

I think America's Best Dance Crew, while far inferior of So You Think You Can Dance, is still fun to watch. There were a bunch of Asian kids on it the last time who really wet my whistle.

Yeah, the cast of America's Best Dance Crew was like 45% Asian.

What, I wonder, do dance crews do when they're not competing for Randy Jackson's dollars? Take it to the streets? Go from Jr High to Jr High giving performances that are partly inspirational like, you can achieve anything if you breakdance?

My main problem with any and all televised dance shows would be the cameras. Look, I know you can afford 3 of them on cranes, but that doesn't mean you need to swoop that shit around all the time. How is the viewer supposed to enjoy the symmetry of the group or the dancer's entire body if we can't fucking see it? Absurd.

I wonder. Maybe it's just a way to practice dancing until they 'make it big.' And they probably get 'gigs' like performing at the kinds of Sweet 16 birthday bashes that aren't fancy enough to make it on the Super Sweet 16 show, but are still fancier than any party any of us went to when we were in high school.

So thoughts and feelings on the first show? I thought it was great. I liked every couple except maybe the first one. They bored the stink out of me and they clearly thought the world of themselves, which is way more annoying than screwing up a ballroom lift. When they all pull the faces and flash their number gang signs when they put up the voting numbers, I just want to straight up scoop out my eyeballs. But the dancing was great. I just can't imagine who will get voted off. And there is some kind of serious genius behind those two who choreographed a routine about a soldier and his girlfriend. And I never would have recognized that girl Comfort. Without the baggy clothes and frizzy hair, she's a stunning girl with legs up to there.

I think this guy is hot:

He's Adrien Brody-ish but more Japanese.

He did that "Tim Burton's Wedding" dance where they had to pull scary faces like an Aphex Twins video or something. Anyway, I love dancin!

Oh, yes, the Tim Burton wedding dance was probably my favorite of the night. I also thought that guy was pretty hot but couldn't decide whether or not he's into the ladies. It's so hard to tell with dancers. I have the same problem with many indie boys. I guess it doesn't really matter, though, unless I meet him and throw myself at him and am rejected and then introduced to his boyfriend.

Oh poor Marquis! What is this 'too many tricks in his dancing' bullshit? What's next? "There's too many chocolate chips in my cookies!" "Too much sunshine in the sky!" I thought the tricks in his solo were crazy sick awesome insane, or whatever the dance lingo is.

thanks god Susie's gone, I never understood why she even made it to the top 20.

I felt bad for Marquis though, he got a bum deal. I was hoping a dancer from different couples would be eliminated so that we'd get a new pairing.

I tried to vote for the first time ever this week but I couldn't get through.

Agreed on getting Susie the hell out of there. I could not believe she made it into the top 20! She's really just a club dancer and not even that skilled or unique of one anyway! I don't know who got kicked off last week but I was hoping it had been her. Can't believe she even lasted a week!

Marquis's solo dance was amazing! I couldn't believe he was let go. What the hell. That super vanilla tall guy (Chris?) who Nigel said his grandma was more gangsta then should have gone. I don't think he is anything special.

My favorite routine of the week was the Broadway one. If I could make a living dancing excitedly about all day like this I would so do it. Also, I love that the huge beefy football player guy is totally going for it and is really very good!

I'm really digging Gev too. Gotta love a cheeky sense of humor, eh? Dug his ruminations on the man thong he had to wear for the first time last week. Aw!
There's more than one use for every part
