Horrible Adverts

Post by Woodbine » Mon Nov 16, 2009 12:25 am

I thought we had an adverts thread, but seemingly not, so I'm starting one with the express purpose of moaning about the T Mobile ad featuring that irritating mini John Powers who is starting his own band on Twitter or whatever it is he's doing - there are loads of adverts for it and the general premise seems to be that if you can text more numbers for free or have internet access on your phone you'll be able to contact people you know to start your own (massive) band, as if that was completely impossible otherwise. I believe T-Mobile also did that horrible mass karaoke advert, which I know for a fact was done by Saatchi and Saatchi, because I had the misfortune to be walking past just before they started filming it (thankfully I managed to run away before the sing along) so presumably they're responsible for this shite as well.

I don't watch that much telly these days...so hardly see any brainwashing/advertising. (Thank you Veoh/Megavideo/youku).

While I'm sure that many on here are aware, you can also kill online ads (as long as you're using Firefox, which you should be) with Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865).

Previously, many ads really wound me up...many are misogynist/crass/lowest common denominator - it's been good for my blood pressure that I see much less of them these days.

Having said that, I'm sure I'll look into this (much needed) thread regularly...

Arf! If things had gone very slightly differently the irritating pillock in those adverts could have been ME!!

From the bits of music that they play on the adverts it's another Toploader waiting to happen. And yes, that guy is a dickwad. His name's Josh, for God's sake.

we're going to be beset by josh's in the not too distant future, aren't we? they'll all be coming of age and picking up guitars and making adverts with t-mobile

hasn't josh or joshua been in the top five boy's names for the last 15 years or something?

I don't mind that, really. You can sometimes get an idea of name trends from footballers - for instance I don't know if there was someone in Five Star called Jermaine, but there's a glut of footballers in their mid 20s called that.

Anyway, horrible adverts. I know it's à la mode for cynical people to use the internet to moan about Christmas TV adverts, but Charlie Brooker sums it up nicely here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree ... on-adverts

The bit where he's texting people from the top deck of a bus almost makes you hope for a mugging. What would happen if someone nicked his phone? Presumably the band would be forced to split up because none of them would be able to contact each other. I tried to find his Myspace last night to see if he actually had any songs but I couldn't find it, despite having seen the advert approximately 84,000 times.

I don't think I've seen any of those ads that CB talks about, the M&S one sounds particularly horrific. I will save them for a treat when I've finished me essay. If only my essay were on horrible adverts instead, I'd have finished it ages ago.

This is all very Ben Griffith. The hip unknown singer songwriter who cruised to gigs in a climate controlled Ford Focus.

Two years ago. No, Ive not heard of him since neither.

ha! if you're starting out as a musician here's a check list:

hairgel?
t-mobile account?
a brand new ford focus?

what else?

oh, yeh... attitude

the first three will obviously signify the fourth

ok, now let's have a revolution!

Ben Griffith still appears to be going, he logged into his MySpace as recently as today and, it seems, can count Barack Obama amongst his MySpace friends. I guess that's the kind of thing that happens when your first EP is sponsored by Ford.

I wonder if he got to keep the car?

That sprang to mind with me too, but I couldn't remember whether it was him or not. If we've both been reminded of it then it probably was.

I am not sure if Charlie Brooker has covered this already.

But I hate those adverts where some actors say "This Christmas is all about my boyfriend/son/wife/girlfriend/mum/dad/WHATEVS! and the presents I am going to buy them."

I thought it was all about baby jesus and/or tinsel.

First, the Christians stole Christmas from the pagans, then, the capitalists stole it from the Christians....

No it was definitely a Dan. I remember he was apparently "more than music".

The Iceland Christmas advert is horrid (obviously). It's got Jason Donovan, singing and what is supposedly food. And yet I find myself slightly mesmerised by it.

I cringe whenever that ad for some sort of "we buy your crap" business comes on and there's slang for money, and this one guy goes:

"WONGAS!"

I hate it so much that if I see it's on, I dive for the remote to hit mute before his part comes on. "WONGAS". Yuk.
