SpoilerShow
I 'think' Stannis was cut from the TV adaptation although featured in the first book (although only as a minor character).

Stannis wants to go to war regardless of Melisandre, He believes he is the rightful heir now that Robert is dead (believing that Joffrey is a bastard so to Jaime). Melisandre is a priestess of The Lord of Light (worhsipped in distant eastern lands), who believes (or simply says for her own convenience - I'm several books in and am still not sure which) that Stannis is the 'chosen one' to wield Lightbringer (the sword Stannis pulls from the flames - again if believed) and bring victory over false gods. She essentially turns Stannis against 'The Seven' (the Gods worshipped by the peoples of Westeros) and turns his war into a holy campaign.

Book spoilers, I mean. Maybe I should look into getting spoiler tags? I guess it's accepted that there'll be episode spoilers after it airs in the US.

There's nothing in my post above that wasn't covered in the first episode of this new season (and my post was made after it aired here in the UK).
SpoilerShow
You saw the burning of The Seven. You saw Stannis proclaimed as the chosen one by Melisandre and taking Lightbringer from the flames. You saw Stannis dictating a letter proclaiming Joffrey to be Jaime's bastard. Due to economy of time, it just wasn't explained very well.
And I can assure you, I've revealed nothing of what comes in the books.

But if you disagree, by all means remove my posts.

Sorry, I skimread it because I thought it was a spoiler and forgot about that sword. Spoiler tags might still come in handy, though.

So is Game of Thrones on a premium channel over there? Do you all have to pay extra for it? HBO is stinking expensive! I think we had it for free or as part of some deal last year when the first season was on. I'd have to up our total cable package and then pay extra for HBO to watch it now. I think I'll just sit it out and wait for the DVD.

I just download it the day after it's aired. I don't have the patience to wait.

In the Netherlands it's only available on HBO, which is very new here and only available to a few people who live in the right place and pay quite some money.

Some people aren't quite there yet though (a fog of ideas), so for them it does include a big spoiler: Robert is dead. Ah well, they'll still enjoy it, won't they?
Nicely done Gordon, with the spoiler tags.

Sky Atlantic, which I think I can watch live, as the in-laws have it, but it's easier just to find it elsewhere.

A bit slower, this week's episode, wasn't it? In a nice way though. The ending still has me impatient for next week again though.

I've previously downloaded a couple of episodes in which the Dothraki language was subtitled, but in most it is not. Is it on the DVD?

(Also: Lily Allen's 'Alfie' is about Theon Greyjoy? I had no idea he was her brother until today.)

I think every episode i've ever seen has been subtitled or I would have been annoyed.

Interesting. I've obviously been downloading from the wrong sources then. I gathered from the internets that it isn't officially subtitled, but that fans are trying to figure it out. I may have misread that.

I've not watched it live on TV. It may be that some people burn the subtitles in, and some people leave them off so the show can be subtitled in other languages.

this week's episode was cracking, I like how the emotional punch of some of the storylines is far more visceral than any of the choppingupping or bumpengrinding

That scene with Arya and the dude from the Night Watch (just before the fight at the end) was brilliantly written and acted. All the stuff with Theon was great as well. I almost started feeling sorry for the odious little shite.

Same again for episode 4.

But most of all: what the hell was that?

we just watched episode four and it was great (as ever), I love that it had an embarassment of 'what the fuck?' riches and that they seem to be increasing episode by episode

I also like that the actor playing the hound is the fella that went 'yarp' in hot fuzz
