recommend me non-english fiction!

Post by cupcake_love » Tue Mar 13, 2012 11:22 am

i have to analyse a modern (1970-now) non-english book for class and i need advice. i'd prefer something not too complicated, as i need to analyse it (as previously mentioned yada yada).
to give a hint of my taste, my favorite non-english ones at this point are "the man who loved yngve" (norwegian) and "this is not a love song" (german), which are basically both love songs with unhappy endings.

any suggestions?

Based on what you've said you like, how about this? It's very sad though.

Not sure if I quite know exactly what you're after but what about Popular Music by Mikael Niemi?

It's lightweight, easy to read, it was originally written in Swedish and Meänkieli, so it's linguistically interesting, and most importantly it's a good book too. He's written some other books too, but I've no idea as to the quality, or otherwise, of those.

Oh hang on a minute. I screwed that all up and put the non in front of fiction instead of English and thought you wanted nonfiction in English. So my book recommendation is totally useless.

Thanks again, dyslexia. First you (and that 7am astronomy class) ruined my GPA and now this.

well, actually it can't be swedish either, since it's actually for a swedish course, which requires me to read a) one swedish book (which i've already got picked out and b) one non-english book, but thanks anyway!

If you like Mannen Som Elsket Yngve, you could maybe move on to the next book about Jarle Klepp? Kompani Orheim, the film version of which is being released these days.

Or if you want to stay in a music referencing mode (like "...Yngve"), one of my favourite Norwegian books is Bikubesong av Frode Grytten. It's collection of vaguely connected beautiful short stories from people living in one block in the small Norwegina industrial town of Odda. (Quite a lot of Morrissey references throughout, and it was made into a Smiths musical some ten years ago.)

Night, and someone has turned up the volume on their TV too high, an interview from Bosnia-Herzegovina 1995: They shoot babies, don't they? Yes, they shoot babies, too. (Followed by pop songs by eg. Genesis.)
