Mince Pies - help!

Post by Bubblegum Records » Wed Nov 11, 2009 18:28

Does anyone know if any of the shops are currently selling vegan mince pies? We need loads for Bubblegum Winter. The only other option is to home bake them - I have loads of recipes but no time - I have been tasked with making the chocolate rum cake for the buffet. Your assistance is appreciated.
It's going to be an interesting weekend at the shops.

Smiles,
G

Quite a few of the cheaper mince pies stocked by supermarkets seem to be suitable for vegans (by accident rather than design, I'm guessing). I'm not strictly vegan these days but I recently got a couple of boxes in Asda that seem to be vegan-friendly, as far as I can tell. They're not marked as such, but I can't see anything suspect in the ingredients list. These ones I've got were £1 for two boxes of six.

So, yeah - avoid the fancier butter pastry kinds and you might be able to find something suitable.

Cheers, Colin.

I'll add Asda to the list of shops to visit on Saturday.

It was the one in Govan, if that's any use. Govan being the spiritual home of vegan food, of course...

Thanks Colin, it does help to narrow the search. Yes, Govan has long been the spiritual home of all things animal political. Having lived there some years ago I can confirm it's status as a spirtitual haven for all.....ahem!

I'm not sure where you can *defnitely* get vegan mince pies, but I'd say that any supermarket brand has a 50/50 chance of being vegan.

Sainsbury's and Co-op label things if they're vegan, so they're a good bet.

i wouldn't be surprised if Mr Kipling did vegan mince pies, I know some of their things are vegan. Ijust tried their website but helpfully, the seasonal produce isn't listed yet.

Oh, I just remembered, I have access to the animal-free shopper online....

Fairtrade fruit mince pies
Company: The Co-operative

are the only ones listed, I'm sure some of the other places will do vegan ones though, I reckon that cos they're seasonal a lot of them won't be listed - they probably change the recipe/place of production frequently.

and the search engine on that site seems to have gone a bit WEIRD.
I am struck speechless by the nape of your neck.

WoW! Thanks for going to so much trouble. I'll add the co-op to the list of shops for Saturday. If I find any I'm going to buy some from each shop - do a taste test - and then buy the best ones. The co-op and tesco both did vegan mince pies and then last year they both had whey or butter fat in them. Inevitably, the "luxury" brands tend to have some form of milk produce in them - milk being a luxury?

I'll definitely buy the red wine (for the mulled wine) from the co-op, they do reasonably priced vegan wine. I won't be sampling it though - a sample can very easily turn into a bottle!

I know that last yearm the co-op were doing bottles of vegan mulled wine at 3quid a throw! I can understand that you may well want to mull yr own wine, but y'know, the option's there..

Also, Sainsbury's are doing vegan (labelled) wine at around 3quid too.

Vegans are taken over the world! Unfortunately we'll end up to fat and pissed to do much about it ;-)

I think I'll mull my own - not a phrase you hear everyday. But it's nice to know that if time is against us, one of us can jaunt to the nearest Co/Sainsburys.
Too fat and pissed? I hope so! I may have quite a lot of food but no drink - at the last Bubblegum "thing" I was spied by mobile phone, dancing like a drunken loon. It was not a pretty sight.

Heh, that's what it ALL about isn't it?

I think I've quoted Emma Goldman about a thousand times on Anorak, still "If it means I can't dance, I don't want your revolution!"

The vegan mince pie and mulled wine situation is now resolved. After a bit of late-ish night shopping last night. Now the sampling begins!

UPDATE

I was in Poundland yesterday and they have Mince pies in there that to mine eye appear to be vegan! I think they were called Sergent's. Yup, this is them. No ingredients on the website, but I'm pretty sure they were vegan :-)

I'll look out for these in future. None of the larger supermarkets have any that are vegan. we did manage to fins two suppliers - one even selling vienesse style pies.

I've noticed that people keep going on about viennese mince pies recently, what the hell makes em so viennese, do they have vienetta in them? that'd be good, I'd totally eat a vienetta pie.
