Pine Nut Problems

Post by Uncle Ants » Fri Nov 13, 2009 11:05

This is a bit of a weird one. Starting Wednesday morning I discovered that whenever I ate anything I had a disgusting bitter, bile like taste at the back of my mouth. It'd go away after a while, but came back whenever I ate anything. So I googled "Mysterious Bitter Taste" and found pages and pages of people reporting exactly the same thing. They had all eaten pine nuts three or four days earlier and the problem lasted a week to three weeks ... but I haven't eaten any pine nuts recently (I thought).

But I thought back and on Saturday we had dinner at a friends house and she had made an Italian salad. I didn't remember there being pine nuts in it, but I asked last night and there were ... and she had the same problem. She didn't think it was that though because here husband had exactly the same thing (and still has) the week before and she said he hadn't had any that time. Half an hour later and she called me back and apparently he had unknown to her ... again about three or four days before getting the bitter taste.

Apparently the various food agencies know this phenomena exists, but don't know the cause - it even has a name - Pine Mouth. So far it looks as though it doesn't affect everyone and doesn't affect all pine nuts and only started happening in the past few years. It looks like pine nuts sourced in China may be causing it. Italian and French ones are probably not a cause.

Anyway, right now, everything tastes vile. I think i'll be avoiding pine nuts from now on unless I absolutely know where they are from.

"I used to be able to name every nut that there was. And it used to drive my mother crazy, because she used to say, "Harlan Pepper, if you don't stop naming nuts," and the joke was that we lived in Pine Nut, and I think that's what put it in my mind at that point. So she would hear me in the other room, and she'd just start yelling. I'd say, "Peanut. Hazelnut. Cashew nut. Macadamia nut." That was the one that would send her into going crazy. She'd say, "Would you stop naming nuts!" And Hubert used to be able to make the sound, he couldn't talk, but he'd go "rrrawr rrawr" and that sounded like Macadamia nut. Pine nut, which is a nut, but it's also the name of a town. Pistachio nut. Red pistachio nut. Natural, all natural white pistachio nut."

We've got a bag of mixed nuts and dried fruit and stuff and home and I think pine nuts is the main ingredient. I don't want to eat it now.

So this is where pesto regret comes from. I like "Pine Mouth" though. What a rugged ailment.

Well I'm certainly regretting it, but what's Pesto Regret? It's gone now thankfully.

This is strange... it sounds like what my girlfriend has been having these past few days. And we've eaten pine nuts. I'll see what I can find about this!

This is one of the strangest things I've ever read. Are you sure you're not just conspiring to start a new urban myth? Pine mouth?

Pine Mouth would be a good username / album name.

Seriously, just google "mysterious bitter taste" and see what comes up. In fact I'll do it for you, here. The taste in my mouth last week definitely wasn't an urban legend. Thank god it's gone now though

Strange reading indeed. I love pine nuts but will approach them with extreme caution next time they are presented to me. :O

I had already checked! I didn't really doubt the veracity of your claim. It's just that it sounds like something out of a McSweeney's short story. Glad it passed anyway. I too will approach pine nuts with some caution.

it doesn't have to be an urban legend as such, perhaps you're just very suggestible, ants, or have a dirty liver

the daily mail is on your side though

Ha. Well my liver is probably a disaster area. Mind you one thing that seemed to taste fine was beer:). My pee didn't go green or smell of petrol though, so there's a small mercy.

Well thankfully I've never had severe Pine Mouth but sometimes I do get a little bit of that nasty sensation you describe after a big bowl of dirty pesto pasta and I regret it and I swear off pesto for ages. But it just tastes so good, I can't stay away.
