they're going to do it next season, unless they realised it's a dumb idea.

it's nice in theory... it should mean people chasing wins more keenly.. but it could also mean drivers with no hope of winning dropping off and preserving their engines.. particularly towards the end of the season. i think it would also significantly increase the use of 'team orders' (even though they're against the rules) because 1st place would be disproportionally beneficial.

the last race of least season was incredibly exciting because you had massa going all out for the win that he needed, and lewis plundering around the midfield to try and bag a few points.

they should change the points system to give a bigger bonus for coming first... maybe make it 12 points for first place. there used to be a 4pt gap when only the top six got points.

a guy who gets 8 wins and 9 seconds should beat a guy who gets nine wins and 8 tactical retirements.

Maybe that's the trouble - if they go back to having a 4 point gap, it's too much like admitting that they shouldn't have got rid of it. I never understood why they got rid of it anyway - it seemed a pretty good balance between the current points system and the "most wins" system, and they kept it the same for ages. There were plenty of close years until Schumacher turned up.

That and Brawn's poor form should make things more exciting, it'll be fun if he has a few battles with the likes of Hamilton and Vettel. It's a shame it's in unfortunate circumstances, but at least Massa is looking ocake at the moment.

Plops.

Schumacher calls off F1 comeback
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsp ... 186319.stm
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher has abandoned his comeback with Ferrari because of a neck injury.

The 40-year-old, who retired at the end of 2006, was set to deputise for the injured Felipe Massa at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on 23 August.

"Unfortunately we did not manage to get a grip on the pain in the neck which occurred after the private F1-day in Mugello," Schumacher told his website.

Schumacher suffered the neck injury in a bike accident in February.

"The consequences of the injuries caused by the bike accident in February, fractures in the area of head and neck, unfortunately have turned out to be still too severe," he added.

"That is why my neck cannot stand the extreme stresses caused by F1 yet. These are the clear results of the examinations we did on the course of the past two weeks and the final examination on Monday afternoon.

Good to see indiehorse grab pole position for the Japanese grand prix...

I'm really looking forward to next season. Hamilton v Alonso in the two big-name cars, Vettel getting better all the time, Raikkonen with a point to prove at McLaren. It's going to be great.

According to my mum, which former F1 boss was having an affair with one of the loveliest people in the office and had girls in every city and is an asshole who fully deserved to lose his job?

He looks like a paedophile emerging from court, doesn't he?

Then again, he always looks a bit like that.

This is the least exciting championship race ever, isn't it? And it should be exciting, what with it being relatively close.

It feels like Button's going to win the title by proxy on the basis of half a season's work, that's why it feels anti-climactic. It's very strange how the entire usual order of teams and drivers has been jumbled up and nobody thinks it's in any way odd. Red Bull and Honda finished 7th and 9th in the constructor's championship last season!

The British Grand Prix isn't going to be at Donington next year, then.

Anyone reckon this was a ruse by Eccleston to get rid of it altogether?

I just tried to get some time on the phone with Gillett, and got this back from his press officer.
Hi Sam
At the moment, Simon is not available to talk to anyone but I am trying to get him to agree to a press conference late today, so I’ll keep you informed.
Thanks
