I liked how it was the Dutch guy who caused that, yet he still somehow managed to qualify. The guys behind him cannot have been too pleased.

I've been really enjoying the fact that the athletes are actually human in the interviews by smiling and being excitable and waving to their mums or crying with happiness. It's lovely, and the perfect antidote to footballers talking about "putting the result behind them and focussing on the next game going forward" in a monotone voice or whatever they say.
And by me, I mean, Flexo.

Yes!

I loved how this morning, when Maarten van der Weijden won his unexpected gold medal on the 10 km outdoor swimming everyone went completely crazy with happiness. Pieter van den Hoogenband, who was commentator for Dutch TV was absolutely hysteric. That's partly of course because Van der Weijden was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2001. It's a nice story and on top of that he's the friendliest athlete you'll ever see.

what's this modern pentathalon nonsense?

it's like some sort of public school's games day: shooting, fencing, swimming, riding, cross country- pretty much activities one can do on pater's country estate

I hope for the 2012 olympics london takes the initiative and insists on an pentathalon that truly reflects life in london with a nu media pentwatathalon consisting of five truly testing endurance events:

1. being considered a somebody in shoreditch in less than 24 hours
2. droning on about your sick kicks (trainers) to anyone who'll listen without the sudden realisation that nobody actually gives a fuck or being sneered at or having your trainers pulled off you and shat in
3. starting a club night that doesn't make everyone else vomit with excrutiating embarassment at how nauseatingly self-conscious you are ('like this arsehole even knows what dupstep is, the utter utter utter prick')
4. convince a stranger you've arrived on the media scene because your blog got 2,000 hits one wednesday seven months ago and internet world domination beckons
5. insisting in a convincing manner that everyone who hates you is wrong and that they are squares who just don't get it and all your tiresome bollocks talk is highly innovative and original and inspired when in fact you sound like a 7 year old editorial in the face 'mashed up' with a ranty letter you half remember in one of the early copies of jockey slut you found under your big brother's bed while looking for porn

if at the end of all events there is a tie then the pentwatathaletes get points for sheer chutzpah when their introduce their strange, lumpen friends as 'these are my homes... the beautiful people'

perhaps?

Asafa Powell got to cross the line and show what he could do. Good on him.

You'll all be delighted to hear that pillock "Kamakaze" crashed and burned in the BMX.

And it's gold for Australia in the mens' pole vault. Our first mens' track & field gold since Mexico, apparently.

Isn't synchronised swimming odd?

So odd that the BBC couldn't even be bothered to send along any commentators and just gave us the Canadian commentary instead!
I love the oddity of Matthew Pinsent doing the Tae Kwon Do interviews as well.

i still resent that bmx, beach volleyball and synchronised swimming are olympic sports and squash isn't.

Did anyone else see the Croatian high jumper lady who got the silver medal? I've never seen anyone with such a perfect body before. I couldn't stop gawping at her. Shame she had a weird head.

I was sure that Boris was going to drop the flag. It's so reassuring to see such a fine figure representing us on the global stage.

That flag waving bit was hilarious. All Boris wanted to do was keep his hands in his pockets.

Have Chas & Dave been booked yet for the opening ceremony?

I had to listen to the sodding soundcheck/rehearsal for that Visa 2012 Party or whatever it was called ALL DAY at work on Friday. It was quite funny at first until the cast of We Will Rock You were doing the title song for the fourth time. I couldn't be bothered to watch the actual thing but I assume Boris was suitably bumbling?

We can be forever thankful that he did not have to say a single word. As long as he's out before 2012 then maybe the world doesn't have to really know about him.
