A large portion of your brain is taken up with entirely subconscious things needed to keep your body running smoothly. When doing exercise are you consciously telling each muscle to contract? Are you consciously controlling your breathing? Most of the tine the answer is no and yet it still happens. That's still your brain in action, but it's on a different level to your consciousness. I'm pretty sure you'd at least be exercising the part of your brain involved with coordination and balance, although I'm no neurologist so I stand ready to be corrected.

Do you mean in terms of mood? There are quite a few studies that appear to bear that out.
Not sure in terms of mental ability. I can see that certain hormones released might "sharpen" your brain for a short period, but don't know what else it could be.
