I'm very excited about the impending holiday. Wine, lovely food, sunshine, swimming pool, and practicing my Spanish. Doesn't get much better than that.

Where's good for a crazy weekend away in Spain? A little bit of sight-seeing during the day, a few quiet drinks in the evening, entertaining locals to engage with, that sort of thing.

Well coincidently my colleague is just telling me she's off to Barcelona for the weekend.

She got flights for 69 quid (probably cheaper from londinium) and 2 nights at a 4* hotel for 75 quid. She's always jetting off there for the shopping and apparently it's a lovely city and not wild at night. All culcharal or sumfink.

I'm off to Madrid in a few weeks. I love Madrid but haven't been in about six years, any advice on current indie nights?

mr.stolenwine and i are thinking of going to the south of spain for a long weekend next month. any tips on where is good to go? neither of us has been to that bit of spain before. we just want a nice relaxing break somewhere pretty, with some sea and sunshine. i'm scared that we might end up somewhere where they film those 'brits gone wild abroad' shows (or whatever it's called) i don't want to be in wet tshirt contest or flash my bra around town. so yeah, where to go?

Alicante is worth a visit, or Santa Pola just outside it.

I worried it would be full of brits, and it is a bit, but its also the traditional holiday destination for the Spanish themselves, who tend to decant there in the summer when it gets crazy hot. Most of the brit tourists are down the road a bit in resorts.

It has a really nice old town bit, and lots of wandering around can be done.

I really like Murcia too, as its pretty un-touristy, and has lovely old town bits, but its not really beach friendly.

The bit around Murcia is kind of full of golf resorts full of English folks, but they tend not to leave their compounds, which helps. I never saw the point in going to live in Spain, and then basically re-creating your own home counties village and not integrating with the local way of life, instead buying your copy of the daily express and continuing to moan about immigrants in the UK, whilst never actually bothering to learn to speak spanish.

Valencia is a beautiful city. slightly further up right enough. Loads to see and do.

wot he said ^.

i really liked alicante, and as long as you stick to the town itself and avoid the resorts like benidorm, you'll be fine. the old town in alicante is lovely, loads of nice restaurants and bars, and there are plenty of public beaches nearby.

i really loved valencia too, but i guess it might be a bit hectic if you just want to be relaxing near the sea.

What's the restaurant/food situation like for veggies in southern Spain?
