Shall we go to these on our holidays next year then? I've only been to Cramond Island off that list and it's lovely. We should go next time you're in Edinburgh!

Just seen this on the excellent Atlas Obscura site: 8 of the world's eeriest abandoned islands:

Some we're familiar with (albeit not from regular visits), some less so...

Islands! Islands for sale! Get yer lovely islands here! Just sixty thousand quid, or two for a tenner!

Those islands off the Irish coast look quite promising, actually, if we're ever going to get round to starting the People's Republic of Anorak.

I might make it my mission to visit all of these before I die. North Brother Island looks particularly creepy and amazing.

This thread is getting too easy now. I mean some of these places, we could plausibly end up visiting. Let's keep it impossible. How about... islands that don't actually exist any more?

Impossible is amazing but inaccessible is pretty great too: someone from the British Antarctic Survey posted this photo of Inaccessible Island earlier and *feelings*

The last native St Kildan, Rachel Johnson, has died at the age of 93.

It might have existed and collapsed due to submarine landslides, it might just be sailors needing to see land after weeks in the Atlantic and putting all their hopes in fog banks. It may just have been Tristain De Cuhna but they messed up the maps. Saxemberg Island.

I love this stuff. A lost archipelago of phantom islands.

Nice find, that, Dan - thanks for sharing.

In other news, you can finally fly to St Helena.
Until the opening of this runway St Helena could only be reached by sea, which would take five days sailing from Capetown. Now that the islanders can reach the outside world a little more easily I hope they don't go all St Kilda on us and decide they've had enough.

An island in a lake on an island in a lake on an island. Where, perhaps, no-one's ever been.

What's that, Anorak? You want to read about an island 40 miles north of mainland Iceland, straddled by the Arctic Circle, with a population of less than 100 and a church built out of driftwood?

Well, fancy that. It's your lucky day.

So it was hard enough to get to Ascension Island already, but now the runway's out of action.
