This month's HDIF is this Saturday, June 17th, at The Phoenix in central London. Our guest DJ this month is Sean Price of Fortuna POP!, who'll be playing his usual floor-filling mixture of indie pop and northern soul. We'll also be celebrating 45 years since the release of "The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars" by David Bowie, which came out on June 16th, 1972. We'll be playing every song from the album over the course of the night, so come and dance to "Starman", "Suffragette City", "Hang On To Yourself", "Moonage Daydream" and the rest! We had lots and lots of fun doing the "Hunky Dory" special last year and I'm really looking forward to this!

Admission is the regular price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members on the door, and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/399848.

If you'd like to listen to something while you do your hair on the night, I've put together a Ziggy Stardust themed podcast, featuring inspired covers of the songs on the album, plus a demo of one of the songs by David himself. You can listen to that here - https://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podc ... t-special/. I'm really proud of this one. From indie psyche to southern soul, from alt-country to riot grrrl, it's all here. Please have a listen.

Also, if you haven't seen the photos from last month's HDIF yet, they're here - http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.uk/may202017a.html

Last minute notice of HDIF's return to Brixton.

We're back!

How Does It Feel To Be Loved?
Saturday October 7th
The Courtesan, 69-73 Atlantic Road, Brixton SW9 8PU. 11pm-3am. £4 members, £6 non members, £6 advance ticket.

Advance tickets here www.wegottickets.com/event/413330

We're delighted to announce that HDIF is returning to Brixton for a one-off night on Saturday October 7th. We orignally ran in Brixton for 12 wonderful years at the Canterbury Arms, from 2003 until the pub closed in 2015, by which point we were Brixton's longest running indie club. We now run monthly at The Phoenix in central London, but we couldn't resist heading south to SW9 for this one-off night.

The Courtesan is the latest addition to Brixton's ever-evolving nightlife scene. A dim sum restaurant during the day, in the evening it transforms into an artistic speakeasy, hosting cabaret, live music, and club nights. The main room has a gorgeous wooden dancefloor and a capacity of 120, and there's also an intimate basement bar that can be opened on the busier nights. I've spent the past few years looking at lots of possible spaces for HDIF in south London, and was instantly struck by the character and atmosphere of The Courtesan. I'm looking forward to putting that wooden dancefloor to the test!

The night opens at 11pm and closes at 3am. If we all feel that the space works well, then we may add additional dates in the future. Our guest DJs for this night are David and Franic of The Wave Pictures.

Membership is free from membership@howdoesitfeel.co.uk

We play:

The Smiths * The Supremes * Belle & Sebastian * Dusty Springfield * The Magnetic Fields * Love * Orange Juice * The Ronettes * Aztec Camera * Beach Boys * The Temptations * Velvet Underground * Felt * The Shangri-Las * Allo Darlin' * Otis Redding * The Field Mice * Dexys Midnight Runners * Camera Obscura * The Four Tops * The Go-Betweens * Tammi Terrell * Jens Lekman * Jonathan Richman * Le Tigre * Pat Powdrill * The Sea Urchins * Sleater-Kinney * Os Mutantes * Neutral Milk Hotel * The Left Banke * The Associates * Martha Reeves & The Vandellas

We're very happy to announce that this year's New Year's Eve party will be at Nambucca, in north London. Recently refurbished with a superb soundsystem and a wonderful wooden dancefloor, Nambucca is perfect for New Year's Eve - 300 capacity, a lovely open layout which means that everyone will feel part of the party, and the perfect shape, a square-ish rectangle not unlike a slightly bigger version of The Phoenix.

Nambucca is at 596 Holloway Rd, London N7 6LB, which is 8-10 minutes walk from both Archway and Holloway Road tube stations and nearer still to Upper Holloway train station. As usual, the night tube will run all night on New Year's Eve. We open at 9pm and close at 5am, and our guest DJ for the evening is Paul Rains of Tigercats and Allo Darlin'. Paul was the guest DJ at our NYE party in 2015 and he did a fantastic job, playing hit after hit, so we're really looking forward to having him back.

We're overjoyed to say that our guest DJ at HDIF in February will be Kevin Rowland. The legendary Dexys frontman has appeared at HDIF five times now and each night was absolutely incredible. And this night promises to be better yet. Kevin's first few DJ appearances at the club saw him play an immaculate selection of music, spanning from Toots And The Maytals and David Bowie to T Rex and the Stooges, and sing along with a couple of the selections, but last year he started to develop more of an intricate show.

His vocal spots were more than just accompanying the records - Kevin found ways for his vocals to inhabit some of the songs and reinterpret them, making the night more like a dramatic gig than a regular club. On one track, he even entered into a conversation with the singer in question - we won't say who, no spoilers! - re-assuring him, cajoling him, admonishing him, until it felt like we were living inside a cut from "Don't Stand Me Down". And having proved that the idea could work at last year's HDIF, he's developed it further, with more vocalisation, more invention, more innovation. Exactly what you'd expect from an artist always striving to move forwards.

So to say that we're excited is an understatement. What has Kevin come up with? We'll find out on February 17th.

What? A B&S special in March? Surely HDIF's B&S album special is in October? Well it is, but this year we're throwing an extra party to coincide with the band's gig at The Troxy on the same night. No album theme to this one - just lots of B&S songs from across their career. Come and dance with us after the show!

The Smiths special.

We're drawing a line.

In April, Morrissey gave an interview in which he dismissed The Smiths as being a "great but simplistic time", and declared that his pride was with his solo work. Asked if he still listened to The Smiths, he replied: "No. It was beautiful, but it's gone."

So here's the line. On one side, Morrissey, his solo works, and the person he is now, abhorrent views and all. And on the other side, there's The Smiths, the sparkling guitar of Johnny Marr, and the poetry of a man who once believed "it takes guts to be gentle and kind".

If Morrissey wants to disown those songs, those words, then that's fine by us. They're no longer his anyway - they belong to the fans, who've kept them alive for decades now. Morrissey has no right to sully them and he knows it - which is why he's turning his back on them. Johnny Marr has been playing and singing more and more Smiths songs live, and it feels like he knows that his time has come to become their custodian. He'll keep them safe.

So we're doing what we always do in the summer - having a Smiths special. But this time we're drawing a line with it. No more Morrissey solo. Smiths forever. Please come and draw that line with us.
