Our guest DJ at HDIF on Saturday is Elizabeth from Allo Darlin'. Elizabeth's DJ-ed at HDIF several times now and her sets just get better and better - she's one of the guests who really knows how to get a dancefloor moving. Last time she played a super danceable mix of indiepop and 60s pop, with the odd 80s gem thrown in for good measure - let's see what she pulls out of the bag this time for us!

HDIF returns to the Buffalo Bar for a one-off special this Friday! We started out at the Buffalo Bar back in 2002 and were there until 2005, and went back for a one-off last year to celebrate the venue's 10th anniversary. Now it's our own 10th year, so we thought we'd return for one last visit. The nights we had at the Buffalo Bar were really special and last year's one-off was no different, so please come along for a night of indiepop, northern soul, girl groups and chocolate vodka! If you're going to Bis at the Lexington, then why not come to us for a dance afterwards - we're serving as the aftershow party for the gig, so you'll be able to shake your stuff alongside Bis themselves! Plus our guest DJ is David Callahan of The Wolfhounds, who was the second person ever to guest DJ at HDIF. Hurrah!

Indie song of the week: "Almost Prayed" by The Weather Prophets
Sixties song of the week: "Friday On My Mind" by The Easybeats.

Both of these songs were staples of the HDIF playlist between 2002 and 2005, and we'll be playing both on Friday night. We've put together a podcast of songs from the early days of the club here - http://www.mixcloud.com/hdif/hdif-podcast-16/ - if you'd like to hear more.

If you are going to Bis, it might be worth picking up an advance ticket, which will guarantee entry all night. They're here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/173722 - There'll be tickets on the door too, of course, for the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non members.

It's time for another Smiths special, finally getting around to the one Smiths album we haven't played in full at HDIF.

We'll be playing all of "Strangeways Here We Come" over the course of the night, plus the four "in between" singles that led up to the album's release ("Panic", "Ask", "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" and "Shelia Take A Bow").

Our guest DJ is Paul Court of The Primitives. He'll be playing a set featuring some of the songs that The Primitives covered for their recent "Echoes And Rhymes" album and some similar girl-fronted tunes. Two specials for the price of one! It's going to be quite a night.

Our guest DJ this time is David Gedge of The Wedding Present - or at Time Out describe him in their HDIF listing this week, "a real life indie superhero in the flesh"! David's DJed at the club from the very early days - his first spot was at the Buffalo Bar in 2003 - and it's aways a pleasure to have him back.

A quick reminder that HDIF returns to the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday. Hurrah hurrah hurrah! We've been on holiday, we've DJ-ed at Indietracks and End Of The Road, we've squeezed as much summer out of the summer as possible, and now we're back to the glorious function room of the Canterbury Arms for some indiepop and northern soul dancing. I cannot wait. Our guest DJs are Sarah and Astrid from The Actionettes who are superb DJs, Sarah looking after the indiepop/riot grrl side of things and Astrid taking care of the 60s and soul half of the bargain.

Guest DJs: Lang & Lopez. The Actionettes' Sarah and Astrid return to HDIF for another floor-filling set of indie pop and northern soul. Ms Lang looks after the indie pop side of proceedings - she certainly knows her stuff when it comes to Talulah Gosh, Mambo Taxi, riot grrl and the like - while Ms Lopez handles the soul and sixties side of things. Plus it's our return to the Canterbury Arms after our summer break. We can't wait!

Our guest DJ at HDIF at The Phoenix on Saturday is David from Comet Gain. David's DJ-ed at the club several times now, and has turned in a very cool vinyl-only set each time, playing 60s pop, indie pop, punk rock, and more - think Felt, The Left Banke, The Kinks, TVPs and so on.

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non members. Advance tickets, which guarantee entry all night, are £6 and available here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/186428. If you're going to see Withered Hand and Darren Hayman at the Bull And Gate on Saturday night, then there's a reduced admission offer for HDIF - just show your We Got Tickets print out for the gig at the door at HDIF and you'll get one pound off entry.

Indie song of the week: "Do You Always Dress Like That In Front Of Other People's Boyfriends?" by Mambo Taxi. Quite why I haven't played this at HDIF before is a mystery, although I suspect Sarah Actionette and Amelia may have included it in their sets over the years. If you don't know this superjangly grrlpop tune, take a look at the video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6sXxX_1_SU
Soul song of the week: "Naughty Boy" by Jackie Day. Superlative northern soul. Take a listen to that one here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5lkTha2y2M

We're back at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday for another round of indiepop and northern soul dancing. Our guest DJs are all of Tender Trap, who will be slamming down the tunes (or at least pressing go on the CD player) in a tag team formation stylee. The band are riding high right now with the release of their new album, "Ten Songs About Girls", which has prompted everyone from The Guardian to All Of The Internet to declare their magnificence once more, and they'll be celebrating, dancing and possibly getting in each other's way on Friday night. Come along!

Indie song of the week: "Everything" by This Many Boyfriends. The brilliant new album by TMB is streaming on The Guardian website this week, and very very good it is too. You can take a listen to it here - http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicbl ... sfeed=true - Better still, the last song on the album, "Everything", namechecks HDIF! Fame at last! "Last night How Does It Feel saved my life," croons Richard, apparently inspired by a visit to the club last March.
Soul song of the week: "Country Woman" by The Cals. I picked this up on seven inch just before going to the Pooh Sticks soundcheck, and it kicked off a little bit of dancing after the show. A super infectious rock'n'roll number that will kidnap your feet if you're not careful.

Totally forgot to mention that it's the C86 Special at HDIF in Brixton. Tonight!

Same drill as before, loads of jangly and noisy indiepop from 1986, 87 etc. Vinyl, posters, dancing, fun.

Just a quick reminder that it's HDIF at The Phoenix again this Saturday. Our guest DJ is the wonderful Jyoti Mishra of number one hitmakers White Town, which is always a cause for celebration in our house as Jyoti is a sweetheart and a tip-top DJ to boot. If you're going to the Chickfactor show at Bush Hall, why not come dancing with us afterwards? It's a ten minute scoot along the central line from Shepherd's Bush to Oxford Circus, after all. And let's face it - where else in London will you be able to dance to The Pastels and The Aislers Set after watching The Pastels and The Aislers Set? Nowhere, that's where.

Admission is £4 for members, £6 for non-members, and £6 in advance for members and non-members. Advance tickets guarantee entry all night, so you can take in a pint after the Pastels and then wander into HDIF whenever you fancy. You can pick one up here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/187388

Indie song of the week: "Light Rotation" by Tullycraft. The new single by the American indiepop legends and it's an instant classic! Not out til next year, but we have a sneaky advance copy! Yay!
Soul song of the week: "Flipsville" by Stormy Gayle. Technically a rockabilly song from 1959, but if we want to call it soul music then we will! Super atmospheric, super danceable, like a freight train in the dead of night, which is one of those phrases that won't mean anything at all until you listen to the song. Which you can do so here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llAY7m7qbfM

This Friday's HDIF in Brixton is a Magnetic Fields special. Quite why we haven't done a Magnetic Fields special before now is a mystery. We've had members of the band attend the night (here's Claudia at the Canterbury Arms in 2004: http://www.howdoesitfeel.co.uk/oct1peterclaudia.jpg). Stephin almost DJ-ed at a night we did in 2005. We've had people on their knees in the middle of the dancefloor when we've played certain Magnetic Fields classics. But we've never done a proper, full-blown Magnetic Fields special...until now.

So on Friday we will be playing lots and lots of Magnetic Fields songs, from throughout their career, alongside our usual mixture of indiepop and northern soul. If there's a specific Magnetic Fields song you'd like to dance to, please email me and I'll add it to the list. If you want to hear lots of the slower songs nice and loud, then turn up early. I always love the first hour and a half of the Brixton HDIF, when the club is slowly filling up and I get to play loads of slow/obscure/slow and obscure songs - it feels like the dream secret pub tucked away down a quiet backstreet far away from the real world. Adding lots of Magnetic Fields songs to all of that sounds like heaven.

Indie song of the week: "We Are The Men That You'll Grow To Love Soon" by Let's Wrestle. Brilliant lo-fi pop, in honour of their live show at the Lexington this Tuesday.
Soul song of the week: "I Ain't Finish Yet" by Robert & Ron. I meant to play this at the last HDIF but didn't get round it to. Fantastic southern soul, more Sam & Dave than Sam & Dave themselves!

Magnetic Fields special. A night celebrating the magnificence of Stephin Merritt and company has been long overdue at HDIF. We'll be playing songs from throughout the band's career from "The Charm Of The Highway Strip" to "69 Love Songs" and beyond. Guest DJ: Colm McCrory (Language Of Flowers)

We play: indiepop, northern soul, girl groups, Motown, and the songs that saved your life

Our guest DJs are this Saturday are Bonnie And Clyde, the fantastic Spanish DJ team from Barcelona, who've DJed at HDIF twice before and once at Indietracks, and definitely know a thing or two about getting a dancefloor hopping. Looking back over their first ever guest set at HDIF - back in 2007 - they played everything from Talulah Gosh, Tindersticks, Suburban Kids and Lloyd Cole to France Gall, Dusty, The Shangri-Las and Los Brincos, and I'm sure we can expect an equally danceable set on Saturday night. So come out! Laugh in the face of 2013's woes - beloved bands splitting, legendary club nights calling it a day, record shops closing, the temperature plummeting - and dance your way into a happier new year. That's my plan anyway and I'm sticking to it...!

Indie song of the week: "Broken Toy" by Veronica Falls. The Vronk have outdone themselves with their second album, by all accounts, and I'll reckon we'll be dancing to a lot of their songs at HDIF this year. This, off that new record, is a real gem.
Soul song of the week: "Mean Woman Blues" by Roy Orbison. Yes! Roy Orbison! At last! I was watching the BBC documentary about the Big O over Christmas and there was a three second clip of him playing this song on a TV show somewhere - at which point, I leapt onto YouTube and tracked it down. What a song! What a performance! Super danceable and full of joy. I played this at Great Big Kiss last Friday and it was glorious, so I just have to play it again at HDIF.

This Saturday will be a Camera Obscura special at HDIF at The Phoenix. Quite why we haven't held a Camera Obscura special before at the club is a mystery, but with the band poised to return with a brand new album, now seems to be the perfect time. We'll be playing songs from throughout their career, from "Eighties Fan" right up to "Honey In The Sun", so please come along for a dance! Our guest DJ is Dickon Edwards, of Fosca, who has DJ-ed at HDIF from the very beginning, and is one of my favourite regular guests. I always know we're in for a great night when we have Dickon as our guest.

Indie song of the week: "Number One Son" by Camera Obscura. Hand-clapping, hip-swaying happiness from the band's second album. Can't wait to shimmy and shake to this beauty on Saturday night!
Soul song of the week: "I Taught Him" by Gloria Scott And The Tonettes. Pure girl group heaven!

We're back at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday for another quiet, refined evening of indiepop and northern soul dancing. Our guest DJs this time are Owl & Mouse, who have played HDIF Presents several times but never DJ-ed at the club before. Singer Hannah is a huge fan of Jens Lekman and Talking Heads and Tigercats and the like, so expect a super danceable selection of indiepop and Eighties pop. Hurrah!

Indie song of the week: "Carry On, Carry On" by Edwyn Collins. Brilliant foot-stomping indiepop/northern soul anthem from Edwyn's new album.
Soul song of the week: "Roll Over Beethoven" by The Sonics. Chuck Berry's classic given a good roughing up by the garage rock legends.

Sat Apr 20 - HDIF's 11th birthday and Dexys special in Londo

Post by ian » Fri Apr 19, 2013 11:43 am

Happy birthday to us! Happy birthday to us! Yes, we're overjoyed and faintly astonished to announce that this Saturday will be our ELEVENTH birthday party! Woo-hoo! Not long now til we're a moody teenager, but before then there's still time to bounce around excitedly to indiepop, northern soul, 60s girl groups and the like at The Phoenix in central London. Hurrah!

To mark the occasion, we have a ton of stuff happening on Saturday night. First off, it's a Dexys special. As Kevin Rowland and team will be playing the fifth day of their nine date residency at the Duke Of York theatre in the West End on Saturday, we've decided to hold a special night to celebrate one of our favourite bands. We'll be playing songs from all four Dexys albums throughout the night, plus songs the band have covered and songs that have inspired them over the years. Guest DJ David Christian of Comet Gain is a huge Dexys fan, so he'll be pitching in with some classics too.

This night is also our annual T-Shirt Weather Special. If such a thing lurks in your wardrobe, please come along in your favourite band or music related t-shirt. A pound off entry if it's a Dexys t-shirt!

Plus - to celebrate the fact that Saturday is Record Store Day, you can get a pound off admission if you show a receipt proving that you bought a record on Saturday. There's tons of cool instores and the like happening on the 20th, so why not go record shopping for the day and then come to us for a dance afterwards? Sounds like a plan!

Indie song of the week: "Old Man Don't Waste Your Time" by Darren Hayman And The Long Parliament. Darren takes a break from crafting sublime alt-folk to knock out a Hefner-tastic indie dancefloor smash! Yay! Talking of Hefner, you can probably expect a certain other song as well...
Soul song of the week: "Bar-B-Q" by Wendy Rene. To mark the long overdue arrival of spring - and surely it must be here now, please! - a sun-dappled feelgood northern classic.

Advance tickets for Saturday are here - https://www.wegottickets.com/event/215587 - Otherwise, it's the usual price of £4 on the door for members and £6 for non-members.

We're very pleased to announce that this Friday we're holding another of our occasional C86 Specials at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton. We'll be playing lots and lots of jangly indiepop, focussing chiefly on 1986 and 1987, but also taking in gems from 1981 to 1989. So roughly Postcard and Cherry Red to Creation and Sarah. Or to put it another way, the likes of:

Another Sunny Day * The Bodines * The Brilliant Corners * The Close Lobsters * The Clouds * The Corn Dollies * The Farmer's Boys * The Flatmates * The Field Mice * The Go Betweens * The Groove Farm * The Haywains * The Hit Parade * The House Of Love * The Housemartins * James Dean Driving Experience * The Jasmine Minks * The June Brides * Kitchens Of Distinction * The Loft * McCarthy * Monochrome Set * The Motorcycle Boy * My Bloody Valentine * Orange Juice * The Orchids * The Pooh Sticks * Primal Scream * The Primitives * The Sea Urchins * The Shop Assistants * The Siddeleys * Strawberry Switchblade * The Trashcan Sinatras * The Wake * The Waltones * The Wolfhounds * 14 Iced Bears

Our guest DJs are Sandy and Karren of Stolen Wine Social and Matthew of Big Pink Cake and The Fireworks. We'll be taking it in turns to do 30 min sets each, just to keep the night fresh and bright and on its toes.

We'll also be having a mini record fair, selling C86 vinyl. If you have any vinyl gems you'd like to sell at the night, just get in touch. It's free to have a table. We just have one stall confirmed so far, but it looks amazing. Mark says he'll be selling:

"Stuff on Creation, El and Sarah Records. Felt/Go-Betweens/Hurrah!/Dentists/McCarthy/Bodines/Jasmine Minks/Josef K/Fire Engines/JAMC/Waltones/Trixies/Pastels/Shoppies/Razorcuts/Orange Juice/Weddies etc.
Maybe some original fanzines...Are You Scared To Get Happy/Caff(Bob Stanley)/Bereznik/The Legend."
