We've finally had some news about the Canterbury Arms, and it's not looking good I'm afraid. The application to demolish the pub and replace it with a block of flats is due to be considered by Lambeth Council on the 11th of March, and the recommendation from the council is to grant permission. There's more info here - http://moderngov.lambeth.gov.uk/ieListD ... 0&MId=8694 - it's item 6.

How quickly things will move after the 11th is anyone's guess. At the moment, I've no idea if Brixton HDIF will happen next month.

Until then...we carry on as normal! Our guests this Friday are The Flatmates, the recently reformed C86 legends. Martin, Lisa, Rocker and Brian will be treating us to a set of indiepop, northern soul, Swedish indiepop and more, and I'm looking forward to it a great deal.

Indie song of the week: "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Smiths
Sixties song of the week: "A House Is Not A Motel" by Love

It's HDIF at The Phoenix this Saturday, and we're very pleased to have Dickon Edwards as our guest DJ once again. Dickon has DJ-ed at HDIF from the early days of the club, and always turns in a wonderful set of indiepop and soul. I feel like we're in very safe hands when we have Dickon as our guest, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he has planned for us this time around.

As always, admission is £4 for members and £6 for non-members, and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/266523

Indie pop song of the week: "King Of Hollywood" by Withered Hand. Taken from his latest, chart busting album (number 93 in the proper UK top 100 this week - well done Dan!), this instantly loveable dancer is going to fly on the HDIF dancefloor.
Sixties song of the week: "No Fun" by The Stooges. Farewell Rock Action, we'll be handclapping, footstomping and dancing up a storm for you.

It's HDIF at the Canterbury Arms in Brixton this Friday. By my reckoning, we have three of these left now. I can do April, May and June, I'm away in July and August, and September seems an awful long way away, so having the final Brixton HDIF in June is starting to make a lot of sense. I'll know more once I've spoken to the family at the pub on Friday, but for now please mark April 4th, May 2nd and June 6th in your diaries.

Our guest DJ on Friday is Liz from The School. Liz has DJ-ed at the Canterbury Arms several times now and is a brilliant DJ, so she'll definitely have us all shaking our tailfeathers on Friday night.

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members. Advance tickets are £6 and available here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/266524

Indie song of the week: "Shutterspeed" by The Understudies. Following on from their wonderful album launch last night at the Lexington, here's one of the highlights of their just-released debut album, not least because it namechecks HDIF. "There's a disco in a pub/Called How Does It Feel To Be Loved?/Well sometimes, I wonder/And there, we go out dancing/To the one about going home on your own".
http://theunderstudiesuk.bandcamp.com/t ... utterspeed
Soul song of the week: "Eight Days A Week" by Mary Love. This has been a big hit at our little sister club, Great Big Kiss, so I thought I'd give it a spin at HDIF too. Storming, super-danceable version of the Beatles classic. You can't sit down during this one!

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us! This Saturday we celebrate twelve years of indiepop, northern soul, love, laughter and friendship with one of our favourite DJs, Darren Hayman. Darren's played a ska set for us the last couple of years, but this time we've asked him for a general set - so expect indie pop, sixties pop, soul, ska, and whatever else he feels like throwing into the mix. Hurrah! We can't wait!

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non members. Advance tickets are £6 and available here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/263768

As it's April, this HDIF is also our T-Shirt Weather special. Please come along wearing a band or music-related t-shirt, if you own such an item. It could be a much-loved Hefner or Allo Darlin' tee, or a Beach Boys or Tamla Motown t-shirt, or something else entirely - just as long as it's music-related. Of course, if your sartorial style leans more towards a nice shirt or a vintage dress, then please feel free to dress as normal, but if there is band t-shirt lurking at the back of your wardrobe, it would be grand if you could dig it out.

And and and! Seeing as this Saturday is also Record Store Day, you can get a pound off entry if you produce a receipt for a record purchase made on Saturday.

Indie song of the week: "I Love You The Way I Used To Do" by Rocketship. Swoonsome indiepop courtesy of the American popsters playing this year's Indietracks. Check it out here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FA56sXaQi28
Soul song of the week: "Don't Lean On Me" by Colleen Lanza. As played by Kev and Linda at this month's Great Big Kiss, this super loveable slice of sixties pop will have the dancefloor a-shakin' and a-shimmyin'. It also contains the opening line: "Hey, you can lean against a wall/Or you can lean against a tree..." which can't be argued with. Take a listen to it here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kf9hRcrG37Y

So here we are then - the last HDIF at The Phoenix.

And what better way to bow out of our nine year residency at the pub than with a Smiths special? As is traditional, we shall be playing every song from one Smiths album throughout the course of the night, and this year it's the turn of "The Queen Is Dead". The last time we had a Smiths special based around "The Queen Is Dead" we played the whole album in sequence to a packed 100 Club. This time, we'll dot the songs throughout the night. And, oh, what songs! "Bigmouth Strikes Again"! "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out"! "Cemetry Gates"! "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side"! And more, and more, and more....

Our guest DJ is Neil Jones from the London club night Des Was A Bowie Fan.

Welcome return to HDIF for James from The Proper Ornaments and Veronica Falls. The debut album by The Proper Ornaments has been one of our favourites of the year, a super cool mixture of psychedelia and garagey indie pop, so we're looking forward to seeing what James pulls out of the bag for us this time around.

Our annual Belle And Sebastian special, in which we play every song from one B&S album over the course of the night. This year it's the turn of "Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant". "There's Too Much Love"! "Woman's Realm"! "The Wrong Girl"! "Waiting For The Moon To Rise" (my personal favourite). And the song where Isobel has a valiant first attempt at what she'd later get brilliantly right with Mark Lanegan!

I've also been asked to include a few songs from "Storytelling", as that doesn't usually get a special of its own. So we'll be having a few tracks from that too!

As you may have heard by now, the Buffalo Bar has been told that it has to close by the end of the year. So that means there's two HDIFs left at the Buffalo Bar - this Friday, with the Wave Pictures as guest DJs, and Fri Dec 19th.

Please come along if you can. We're trying to make the most of every night we have left at the Buffalo Bar. It's a wonderful space, and was our very first home, and if it wasn't for the bar and the people who run it, there'd be no HDIF. If this is goodbye, then let's say goodbye in style!

Well, here we go. New year, new venue, new chapter for HDIF. This Friday sees the very first HDIF at the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston. We'll be taking over the main dancehall from 9pm-3am, playing our usual mixture of indiepop and northern soul. For the first hour and a bit, what we play in the back room will be piped out into the rest of the pub, so you can come and sit and have a pint and a chat, as normal. Then the pub's usual playlist will take over in the front, and we'll just be in the backroom. It's a great space - nice square dancefloor, and a big stage, which you're more than welcome to make the most of. I think we're going to have lots and lots of fun in there.

Our guest DJ is none other than David Gedge of The Wedding Present. David first DJ-ed for us at the Buffalo Bar in 2003, and has DJ-ed at the club several time since, in both Brixton and central London, and we're very happy that he'll be helping us settle into our new home. Tickets are the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members, and £6 in advance for everyone. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/303257

Happy birthday! Happy birthday!

We're deliriously happy to announce that this Friday is our 13th birthday party. Thirteen years! We've danced to indie pop and northern soul all over London, from the Buffalo Bar to the 100 Club, from the Canterbury Arms to the Grosvenor, from The Phoenix to the Montague Arms, and now we're becoming a teenager in our new home of The Shacklewell Arms in Dalston. Hurrah! Helping us celebrate is our guest DJ Bill of Allo Darlin', who will be bringing his usual joy and good cheer to the proceedings, playing a set of indiepop, sixties pop and more. We're also very pleased to have a performance by dancers The Britpopettes, who'll be shaking their tail feathers to the likes of Belle & Sebastian, Elastica and more. Yay!

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members, £6 for non-members, and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/313279. Doors open at 11pm, The Britpopettes will be dancing at midnight, then it's Bill DJ-ing til 1am, and then me til 3am.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the last "not" HDIF in Brixton. It was a great night, full of fun and happiness. I shot a small video of everyone dancing to the final song at 2.30am, and it's a joy to see. Take a look here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rmMbM5OnZw

We're back at the Shacklewell Arms again this Friday, and we're very pleased to say that our guest DJs are The Wave Pictures. Hurrah! The last Wave Pictures gig I saw was at a packed Shacklewell Arms, so it'll be fun to see them DJ-ing in the same room. They'll be playing their usual super-danceable mix of indiepop, soul, rhythm'n'blues and whatever else takes their fancy. If you haven't seem them DJ before, their sets are always brilliant, and this promises to be a fantastic night. Come out for a dance!

If it's the summer, then it's time for our annual Smiths special! We usually dedicate an evening to a particular Smiths album, but this year we thought we'd do something slightly different, and have a Smiths singles special. We'll be playing as many Smiths singles as we can in four hours, alongside our usual mixture of indiepop and soul. "This Charming Man"! "Hand In Glove"! "Shelia Take A Bow"! "Panic"! "Ask"! And loads loads more.

Guest DJs: Niall and Anna of The Spook School.

HDIF at the Shacklewell Arms is on this Saturday rather than Friday. As Belle & Sebastian are playing at Somerset House on Saturday, we thought it would be a good idea to throw a big dance party after the gig. We'll be playing our usual mixture of indiepop and northern soul, with loads and loads of B&S thrown in for good measure. Our guest DJ is Colm from Help Stamp Out Loneliness.

It's super easy to get from Somerset House to the Shacklewell Arms by the way - walk to Temple Tube station (7 minutes walk according to the TFL website), then tube to Whitechapel (14 mins), change onto the overground, which will take you up to Dalston Junction (8 mins), then it's a short walk from there. The gigs at Somerset House are usually over by 10.30pm, so you'll be with us not long after we open at 11pm. Colm's on from midnight til 1am, and then it's me til 3am. Yay!

Admission is the usual price of £4 for members and £6 for non-members on the door, and £6 in advance. You can pick up an advance ticket here - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/320750

OK, the day we've been dreading is finally here - we've had confirmation that the Canterbury Arms is to close on September 5th. I really thought we'd make it through to Christmas at least - in fact, part of me thought the pub would be with us for ages yet - but no. I'm away on holiday in August and at EOTR at the start of September, so we have an emergency HDIF/not HDIF/whatever you want to call it THIS FRIDAY. That's Friday August 7th. Last chance to dance in this beloved pub.

And here's this month's edition of HDIF at the Shacklewell Arms.

We have a special team-up as our guest DJs: Paul Rains of Allo Darlin' and Jonny Helm of The Wave Pictures. Paul will be making his DJ-ing debut at HDIF, while Jonny has graced our decks several times over the years. Expect a super danceable mixture of indie pop, soul, rock'n'roll and more!
