The School
Allo, Darlin’
The Social Services

@ The Flying Duck, Glasgow
Saturday 13th March ‘10

After our last bout of gigs just about killed us, we’ve taken a break for a while but we’ll be back in March with a popshow that will be unmissable for fans of dreamy girl-pop fronted by singers called Elizabeth.

Image
The School

The School are an eight-piece pop group from Wales that makes gorgeous, shimmering pop of the kind Phil Spector had a hand in before he went a bit mental. Following on from their ace single All I Wanna Do and Let It Slip EP, they’re set to release their much-anticipated debut album early in 2010. We are hugely excited to have them back in Glasgow and playing at Half My Heart Beats.

Allo, Darlin’

In much the same vein, Allo, Darlin’ have been slowly building something of a cult following with a string of brilliant releases on the WeePOP! and Fortuna POP! labels. They like record labels that end in POP!, you see. Live performances all over the place in 2009, not least at London Popfest, have helped spread the gospel of the Darlin’ even further. Their forthcoming single, The Polaroid Song, is surely going to feature on plenty of best-of-2009 lists. It deserves to, anyway, because it’s fucking ace.

More details when we’ve got them! I know this is ages away yet.

Still plenty of time to find a 3rd band with a singer called Elizabeth - wonder if the Cocteau Twins are busy that night

This is tempting, Colin. I presume the third band will be Cocteau Twins?

Or... wait for it... QUEEN.

HAHAHA.

I've been trying to remember what year it was when I last saw The School play here, in the basement of the Twisted Wheel on Queen Street. I think it was only 2007 but it feels like even longer ago than that. Anders was there and I'm 99% sure sootyzilla was too. Can either of you remember?

Leaving Mornington Crescent?

That's Elisabeth rather than Elizabeth, but what's one letter between friends?

I do remember that happening, yes. Vaguely... I couldn't tell you when it was, no, but I can tell you that if it was 2007, it must have been October or later, as I only moved here the last week of September of that year...

Looks like a good night!

It must have been 2007 then. I remember the Twisted Wheel had just opened under a new name and we couldn’t find it, so I asked a bouncer standing outside a club in Royal Exchange Square if he knew where it was, but I called it the wrong thing so he had no idea what I was on about. Heady days.

Didn’t Roy Moeller play that night too, and Stevie Jackson was there? It’s all coming back.

Yes it was 2007. The Loves were meant to play too but I'd had such an awful time in Manchester the night before I walked off the "tour".

Like that Neil Gallagher.

aw man, that 2007 School show was tops! I stayed up all night after it as I was flying to Japan early the next morning. I packed listening to the wee cd-r ep that I bought from 'em. Lovely memories!

The School and Allo Darlin' is gonna be ace! Count me in for that one, for sure. I can't wait till December so that I can dig into that wee Allo Darlin' Christmas cdep!

They were aaparently offered £1.5m each to reform and tour together a few years ago - and still turned it down - so no love lost there..

I wonder what Elizabeth Price is up to these days - maybe she could complete the trio..?

Looking forward to seeing both the School and Allo Darlin' already - even if it is just 3 days since I last saw them..!
