I've never heard David O'Doherty do stand up or tell, well, any jokes ever really, but I keep thinking this song is sort of interesting in a sort of weird way. I mean, it's not funny, or at least I don't think it's funny, but then it sort of is, too, somehow. Like as if the whole idea is funny without any of the actual bits of it really being very funny. Which might just mean it's just terrible, but I keep thinking about it, so maybe that's interesting in itself anyway. Is it terrible? Perhaps it is.

Re: comedy, of the stand up variety
Johnny Bollocks did a stand up turn sometime in Sheffield last year at a Monkey Swallows the Universe show, I think it was. He bet me a grand that he'd be on American daytime tv within 5 years. There was a Sunny Inside board meeting as to whether to organise a Johnny Bollocks night in Stoke with the stand up act, the Bollocks band (who are/were ace) and a solo JBollocks spot. Shame the idea didn't get off the ground, really. Maybe we should pursue it.....
It's so easy when the door is wide open.

I went to see Stewart Lee last night. Absolutely ace. The infamous Richard Hammond bit was as brill as expected.
I also enjoyed the warm-up act Tony Law. Quite silly but a fair few yucks along the way.

Stewart Lee is playing the Lyceum in Sheffields in January. Very excited. I'm booking tickets now.
I may be ugly and hate-filled but... wait, what was the third thing you said?

Re: comedy, of the stand up variety
I went to see the Bill Hicks documentary last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The animation technique of the first three quarters is a bit weird, and i'm not entirely sure it worked, but his is a good story.
There were lots of clips of him performing as a teenager, which was pretty interesting.
I find a lot of Hicks' fanbase quite tedious these days. It seems his pro-drug speeches are just mantras for half-arsed counter-culturalists to recite (effectively 'he thought of a reason for me to take them so i didn't have to!'), and i can't quite get behind the Hicks-as-prophet... um, 'movement'. The sort of people who bought posters of George Bush gaffes and Che Guevara at uni, before getting an advertising job for Shell.
I'd recommend the documentary for anyone who'd quite like to be reminded of why Hicks was a great comedian. Good stuff.

Re: comedy, of the stand up variety
last sunday i went to see daniel kitsons 66a church road show which was really beautifully done from start to finish - the stage was set up with loads of old fashioned suitcases and hidden inside them were little model rooms that you could only see when the stage lights went down and a light inside the suitcase went up. it was magical.
the show itself was obviously brilliant, all about his relationship with the house he lived in and loved and had to leave. it was sad, but made me think a lot. i came out feeling really fragile.
