Places to send records

Post by MJHibbett » Mon Feb 18, 2008 10:13 am

Morning all! We've got an Exciting New 7" Single ("Do The Indie Kid") coming out in a few weeks, so I'm just starting to sort out the promo mailing list. Has anyone got any hot tips for radio places to send it to? I'm doing The Usual 6Music/Radio 2 people, also DANDELION and that, but has anyone got any other recomendations or Secret Hot Tips?

ALSO: As it's a) vinyl and b) DANCEY (or supposed to be anyway) I thought I'd try sending it to some of the Indie Discos. I'd be ESPECIALLY grateful if anyone could recommend any of these sort of places to send it to, as i have less than 0 clue about who might like it! TA!

Somebody recommended I send mine to Clint Boon cos he does a show on XFM. Or something. It sounded kind of plausible at the time.

And his DJing club thing in Manc is quite popular, or it used to be last time went, years ago. Hmm, what do kids listen to these days?

Clint Boon played a load of stuff from Derby when the Stressed Records compilations came out. I think that was on a Manchester-based radio station rather than XFM though.

Another Nice Mess and POPSCENE with JALAL are always good for euro-fun - I suspect they're already on the Hibbettlist but worthy of note for anyone else sending things out.

DANCEY - yup...it's all squelching synth and beatbox - drop an ecstasy cigaratte and put your hands in the air like you're tony blair...

I think you're mis-selling it slightly Mark! It's "dancey" as in a song about dancing but it's definitely not DANCEY

Hopefully that will put minds to rest of those who still remember the indie wars BETRAYAL of The Beloved and The Shamen

Sorry, it's not "DANCEY", it's DANCEY-DANCEY, also BOPALICIOUS.

These are the sort of things The Kids are saying, right?

For clubs, maybe also Pop Klubb (Newcastle), Loose (Cardiff) and Don't Die On my Doorstep (Sweden). They might be happy with MP3s if you don't want to send vinyl.

Good luck with the release!

So I've got this new album coming out soon and I was thinking about places to send it, to try and get reviews and radio play and stuff. Any new advice on this will gratefully received, Anorak, my old friend.

I was also thinking, I'm not doing a single but if there's an Especially Nice Track that I want to use to promote the album, how would you do that? Set up a free download? Make a promo-only CD single of it?

Do a Video.
30 or 40 promo 1 track CDrs for radio.
Do a video.
Free download of said song when you pre-order the LP.
do a video.
Set up a private stream on soundcloud and try hawking it around some websites as an 'exclusive' - especially works with a video.
Do a video.
not really here

Would it be possible for you to get a video made for it and put it up on YouTube?

PS Trev beat me to it!

Oh, funny you should say video. there's a track I was gonna have a go at making a video for. It's not the Especially Nice Track I was referring to before, but it is a Very Nice Track Indeed - probably second only to the Especially Nice Track.

Thanks you two. x

Gideon Coe should be top of the list for radio shows to send to. He plays loads of independently released stuff, and has to fill 12 hours a week. Plus he seems like a decent chap.

Good one, cheers. Yeah, I like him. Also he seems to play a fair bit more downtempo, sparse, acousticky type stuff these days than when he was on daytimes, which might help in my case.
