fogofideas wrote:it doesn't seem to be very in the spirit of 'zine culture as I understand it and things like 'zines being printed in the book that were marked 'not for reprint in for profit publications' and they appear anyway, it's a bit dispiriting... if I can throw in a few assumptions of my own it does rather smack of 'you should be grateful this is appearing in a proper publication that will be seen by more people than your 'zine ever could' and also that one can reprint 'zines willy nilly whereas one would tread more carefully/respectfully/seek permission if one were reprinting stuff published by corporate publishing houses (for example, thames and hudson)

I suspect like a lot of things this book was produced with all the best intentions but made too many assumptions and some of those assumptions, I have to assume, seem to have been made without due consideration for the creators of the individual works (oh, and facts too)... it may be that one fanzine writer might think 'this is brilliant, I approve' when contacted after the fact whereas another might think 'no, hang on a minute, this is a bit off' and have a perfectly sound reason for why they don't want their work republished in this way (beyond wanting a cut of the profits/payment, etc)

just because it's ok for one doesn't make it ok for everyone and triggs and thames and hudson should've take a bit more time and care when compiling this, to put it mildly
yeh, that's basically what i was very vaguely hinting at

it seems a bit off, like

there seem to be some ripples in the world of blogging about comics regarding copyright law, use of images without permission and so on

it may not be of interest to many but for those compiling zines and blogs and appropriating images to do so it's quite a sobering read, it's also of interest in relation to the controversy around the triggs book:

http://cloud-109.blogspot.com/2011/01/c ... l#comments
http://www.comicsuk.co.uk/Forum/viewtop ... f=1&t=4000

a lot of uk comic blogs are being nervously dismantled of picture content as a result of this... which may be an over-reaction... the initial case mentioned in the first link isn't even about a comic blog, it was an art teacher's blog written for the benefit of her students... the use of one photograph found on google image search looks likely to cost this art teacher rather a lot of money (from several hundred to several thousand pounds) whether she fights the case or (the cheaper option) settles the photographer's demand for payment

Queer Make Music is a zine made by Ste McCabe with lots of help from Lukasz Waclawski.

It is a mammoth zine about, well, queers who make music! It has extra contributions (queer writings, artwork, comics, things) from some wonderful people, although the majority of the zine is simply interviews with amazing Queers from the underground (mostly UK) who Make Music.

If you would like one, please send £2 in cash (cleverly disguised) to:
Ste McCabe
12 Landos Court
Gunson Street
Miles Platting
Manchester
M40 7WT. No paypal/cheques/postal orders please (it's a long story!).
If you live outside of the UK, please e-mail ste_mccb@yahoo.co.uk to sort out payment.

The idea is to discover amazing new Queer music, so please don't ask us who is in it. We want the new to be exciting and don't encourage "I only like the music I know" attitudes. I will say that if you know about underground UK alternative queer music, there will be plenty you'll recognise. If you don't, you will discover lots of greatness!

We are only charging for what it costs to print and send it. It's magazine size and we encourage it to be copied and distributed EVERYWHERE for as cheap as possible.

Should I do a fanzine, Anorak? I've been writing a bit lately and, much as I love blogs, this is different and I'd like to come up with something proper. I want it to be about indiepop and trains and trying to be happy and and Stephanie Flanders and a million other things. But if I do it would it be better to stick to a theme?

I've got two months until I stop work which will also mark the end of free photocopies.

Yes, oh Marianthi, YES. I'm dying for a personal and heartfelt zine full of passion and beautiful prose. I miss them so. You don't need to stick to a theme I don't think. That's something I've been fretting about too. But just let all that you've got in your head come out, don't worry about it being thematic. Get it out while you can and take advantage of those photocopiers!

Thanks Jennifer. I'm a little bit worried it'll end up being the outlet of a massive existential crisis, is all.
