Are there any modern music magazines that are any good?

Not particularly fanzines and especially not focussed on indiepop but more general/mainstream music magazines.

It was triggered by this discussion in the Odd Box thread:

http://anorakforum.com/viewtopic.php?p=248088#p248088

But rather than continue on in there and take over the Odd Box thread I thought I'd start a new topic.

Trev reckons Record Collector but I'm interested in ones that have are mostly about new music. And on paper, none of this new fangled internet nonsense.

For an all too brief period there was Careless Talk Cost Lives which was the last music magazine I read. So something like that would be good.

To be fair to RC it does a lot of collecting stuff - but has a good reviews section these days which reviews new stuff along with reissues.

I used to buy The Wire for the weird and out there stuff but found it far too dry.

I've not read it for well over twenty years when other magazines used to be good (or I was so young that I could put up with the badness) so maybe I should give it another go. Especially as there's someone rather special in the current issue :-).

I found it really weird where you got to the point where most of the paid for mags that were left were the ones that actually revelled in only writing about old records, like nothing good would ever happen again and it all needed to be preserved in aspic. Uncut is the obvious example, which just got creepy (will they ever simply run out of famous rock 'n' roll stories to put on the cover? Will they simply have to republish the old mags again, in tribute to the reissues they so obviously value higher than anything else?), but I remember asking this question of people before and it was like "Melody Maker? Went bust. Select? Went bust. You can have Q. Have a fucking Q". It is, I suppose, a nostalgia for the days when you could actually cover the breadth of the music scene in a single magazine and expect to have some influence. The old stuff is easier for people to grasp.

Actually, the one thing I do know about this is that there are lots of good freebies that you can get in record shops. A friend brought some round for me and there was loads of good stuff in it (Beat Happening, Deradoorian, Julia Holter and J-Gro in the one I can remember). I'll have to see if it's still knocking about somewhere or ask him what it was or something. It's ironic that NME have gone free because they are in no position to dominate that market at all considering how bad they are.

In answer to the original question, in my experience, no. There are no modern music magazines that concentrate on modern stuff that are any good. That scene is dead and buried.

Yep, it has. It is a different thing though. Online writing about music is driven by clicks, exclusives, videos and streams..... I think there are less people writing about music in that old fashioned magazine kinda way.
